It seems to me that bin laden has said things like this before, just before a big hit. It may be more of a coded call to action than a plea for a truce.

That was PRECISELY the first thing I thought of too.
The thing is, they have this weird understand/non understanding about America. They understand that our virtue can be used against us: They do terrible things, and we get held responsible for creating the environment where such a thing is possible. But they do not understand our cultural reactions. Anyone who understands American politics could have told them that the play they made before the last Presidential elections would not work. Any politically savvy American could also have told them that America would not react well to an offer to have a "truce" or "else."
I can understand how it confounds them, because it is hard to figure out exactly the way we work over here. But the old: "I am invincible! -- Stop it or I'll have your other leg." thing is just so obvious.
But, it is sobering to get threats. I can think of some pretty horrible things they could do to us. The only prayer we have at preventing this is for them to be afraid of what we will do in response.

It's better to fight Muslims on their land than our land.LOL!
Not according to that sinister chap in The Princess Bride who tried to poison the wine.
1) Never start a land war in Asia, and
2) Never bet against a Sicilian with life on the line.

Tactically, he stands to lose nothing, and gain much. It may be a call for truce in the sense of a "hudna" as defined by another poster. It's without question an attempt to manipulate our political system. And if he gets a truce out of it, so much the better. I think we are kicking their butts, and that they underestimated the ferocity of our response to 9/11.
radical islam is filled with evil. They have no honor because they see us as not worthy of showing honor to. One has to recognize their enemy for what the enemy is, or they will be doomed.

Wow, that's a great idea. There are so many candidates. I think it would be fatal for someone with real aspirations to go to higher office, (Hillary). Hmmmm... I'm torn between Fat Teddy and Turbin Durbin. I'm going with Fat Teddy. Teddy is pickled beyond reason, he's bitter, and at this point not too bright. That's my bet.

Yes, Muslims typically use a truce to allow themselves to catch up. I agree, they would never call for one if they were ahead.

"Based on what I have said, it is better not to fight the Muslims on their land," he said. "We do not mind offering you a truce that is fair and long-term. ... So we can build Iraq and Afghanistan ... there is no shame in this solution because it prevents wasting of billions of dollars ... to merchants of war."Is there any doubt at all now that bin Laden is counting on the left and the media to bring about his victory over us? This is pure pandering to the left. Bet they go for it, too, and start blasting Bush for not accepting bin Laden's truce offer.
