Salazar was elected in '04 and is therefore up four and a half years from now. I don't think he's worried about a SCOTUS vote that far out from his next election. It might be very marginally relevant if he were running for governor this year, but he isn't.
I think it's simpler. He's a Rat and has Rat beliefs. In addition, he wants to go along with the vast majority of his Rat colleagues and his Rat leadership.
Agreed in general on your point. Salazar is interesting because he walks the moderate line as best he can, though his heart is liberal, yet not whacko. There was an article in the Rocky Mountain News today that rated the Colorado Senators and reps on their voting records. Salazar was by far the most moderate of the Dems, voting with Bush 48% of the time. Sen. Allard(R) got a 78% rating. The Dem reps varied from about 16-25%.
I'm writing from memory, but I'm sure I'm quite close on these numbers.
Sometimes that type of study can be misleading. I doubt that Salazar votes with Bush that often on the big, controversial issues. But I guess we could do worse.
Too bad Coors was such a flop as a candidate. That's what usually happens with inexperienced Republican businessmen and rich guys. We need to stop running such people, except for safe GOP seats.
Agreed.

It was not so much that Coors flopped.
What happened was that the ultra conservatives refused
to support the candidate who won the primary.
They sat on their hands and thus supported the Anarchist/Socialist party.
Coors could have easily won the election if he had had the full party support.
Ben Nighthorse-Campbell had been elected as a Democrat
and switched to the Republican Party because he was informed
by the Democrat Leadership that he had to vote straight
party line and that is what caused Ben to bolt from the party.
I would guess that Salazar will just vote as he is instructed
by his party leadership.
Yes, I think that's right. If Colorado were a strongly Republican state, he might not. But it isn't, and won't be in the foreseeable future. If anything, it's probably going south on us.
Ultra-conservatives who deliberately won't support a basically good nominee are a destructive and despicable bunch. However, I'm not sure that's a large number of people. There are always principled conservatives who do not place their own masturbatory egos above results, but who need to be reminded of the large differences between the parties. So I would blame Coors for not appealing more effectively to this latter group. In general, I think such a task is more effectively done by an experienced politician.
"Agreed" about vote studies, or Coors?
He served on the Executive board.
Very nice gentleman; smooth and personable.
A good clay shooter whom I had shot with;
He enthusiastically supported the Shooting Sports program in scouting.
One of the forces against him was the Rocky Mountain Gun Owners who
claimed that he was against the 2nd amendment.
The local NRA people distrusted him as well.
The ultra conservatives from the northeast part of the state
who supported his opponent never closed ranks after the primary.
For their inaction they now have no vote in the Senate.
He would have been a moderate Republican.
They now have a Democrat.
So they voted against the conservative cause.
Agreed about both, and Xenia St (Green Mountain?) has some great points.
Every day for a week the Old Media will get to announce another Democrat that has decided, in good conscience of course, that they can't support Alito.
So we get a drip-drip news story for a week, before Kennedy belches his last gasp.
It ain't over yet, folks.
Some of these gun people are scorched-earth a--holes.
I'm all for the Second Amendment. But there is such a thing as a gun nut, and these jokers certainly qualify.
Thanks a lot, you stupid rednecks.
That said, Coors should have kissed their butt. As it is, he'll have all the time in the world to become a "great" clay shooter, not just a "good" one.
And the Rat Salazar can go on voting the ACLU/NAACP/NEA line.
