Clooney Under Fire For Abramoff Jab At Golden Globes
WKMG-TV NEWS ^ | 1-23-2006

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Actor George Clooney's off-color joke at the Golden Globes about Jack Abramoff's name reduced the disgraced lobbyist's 12-year-old daughter to tears.

That's according to Abramoff's father, Frank Abramoff, who scolded the actor in an open letter on Palm Spring's Desert Sun newspaper Web site.

Clooney won a Best Supporting Actor Globe for "Syriana," a multilayered political thriller about corruption in the global oil industry. During his speech, he poked fun at Abramoff's first name, and part of his last name -- which drew laughter from the crowd.

The lobbyist's father wrote on the Desert Sun's site that he was astonished by the actor's "glib and ridiculous attack" during last Monday's televised program.

He wrote that the 12-year-old girl was in "a fit of tears" after hearing Clooney's remarks.

"Your words were deeply hurtful to many innocent and decent people," Frank Abramoff wrote in the paper. "One day the truth about my son will come out and there will be a lot of people in your industry and others lined up to apologize for their efforts to destroy him and our family."

Clooney did not respond to Frank Abramoff's letter, but his father, broadcaster Nick Clooney, did.

Nick Clooney told the The Desert Sun he understood Abramoff's father's anger, saying that he knew what it was like to have a child criticized in a "very public way" and that it is "very painful and it's difficult."

However, Nick Clooney added, "The difference here, and it must be said, is Mr. Abramoff's son, instead of pursuing some positive efforts to do what he hoped would change the climate of the American politics, has confessed and has been convicted by that confession of subverting the political process."

Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty earlier this month to federal charges of conspiracy, tax evasion and mail fraud.

In a statement after the guilty plea, Abramoff's lawyer said that his client will work with federal investigators and others "to fully resolve all matters of interest" and make amends. Federal prosecutors are examining whether several Capitol Hill lawmakers received favors from Abramoff or his clients.

“Who would name their kid Jack with the last words ‘off’ at the end of your last name? No wonder that guy is screwed up,”

I thought about this story and wondered if George Clooney would have said what he said to Abramoff's face. Kinda doubt it.

I think I may find myself in the uncomfortable position of agreeing with Clooney on this one.

As he continues to flap his gums, patronage to his movies is receding faster than his hairline.

Translation: His good buddies gave him an award because they want to promote his politics, despite the fact his movie's a piece of crap.

Clooney has no class? What a surprise. I saw his speech. The laughter was muted. He left the stage pretty much looking like the idiot he is.

I heard O'Reilly talk briefly about his recent meeting with Clooney. Adds a lot of credibility to O'Reilly saying Clooney is a very immature man.

And Georgie's junior high locker room attempt at 'humor' is a 'positive effort to change the climate of American politics?'

Both father and son (Clooney) are big time losers. Father at his politics, and his idiot savant son as an actor/activist. Dumb is as dumb does, and those two are dumba$$es!

I am certainly not standing up for Cooney but Jack Abramoff is the only one responsible for his daughtor's tears. He is a criminal of the worst sort. He should be jailed and everyone who is convicted of accepting bribes from him should be stripped of office and jailed too.

Now, don't get me started on Clooney, as his family has plenty to be ashamed of as well.

yup RabidBartender,

most of Hollyweird aren't grounded in reality, and...

a segment of the population don't see the celebs just doing "ME TOO", they're really playing to each other

George Clooney is a big butt wipe. He can't believe the Hollywood recognition he gets, especially for someone who got his shot from being Rosemary Clooney's nephew and having a sometime role on the FACTS OF LIFE.

I like when George is being directed; when he is on his own he is a pure Dapper Dan man

Yes, Abromoff is responsible for what he did or didn't do...

..but classless Clooney didn't have to make a joke about it in front of millions of viewers!

Believe it or not, not every family in America has heard of Jack Abromoff or care one whit about politics...

..but you can be sure lots of sheeple watch these silly shows...(Sad to say!)

...and Clooney has no character or class!

Clooneys awful, but hes nowhere near as bad as celebrities like Harry Belafonte and Danny Glover cozying up to their Commie buddies Chavez & Castro while hurling insults at the US and its President. In a word, "Scum."
