Apparently feeling good about its prospects under Japanese ownership, Monroeville-based Westinghouse Electric Co. yesterday hoisted a big help-wanted sign, offering a $1,000 bounty to employees for referring successful job applicants for the 400 or more openings it expects to have this year.
The nuclear power plant designer, which employs almost 9,000 worldwide, is looking to hire at least 400 people a year corporate-wide over the next six to seven years, with many of the openings in the Pittsburgh region where it employs about 3,000.
Westinghouse spokesman Vaughn Gilbert said the company is hiring in anticipation of a resurgence of nuclear reactor orders and to replace a bubble of employees, hired during the industry's boom years during the 1960s and early '70s, who are retiring. Westinghouse hired 800 people last year but ended up with a net increase of only 400 mainly because of retirements, Mr. Gilbert said.
Most of the openings are for nuclear, mechanical and electrical engineers to do design work, he said. There also are slots for service and repair technicians.

Any of you guys on here want to work at the Circlebarw ranch?
Only if I don't have to live in Pittsburgh.
Do you think they'll still have my records for the training I took there in 7300, SSPS, Rod Control, RVLIS, DRPI, Incore and Excore NI?
Worked at the energy center for a few months as a consultant in mid-late 90s. It was kind of depressing place.. they were still designing nuclear reactors but hadn't sold one in something like a decade or more... 1/2 the building was completely empty. In fact I worked there when the big W was removed from the NYSE because they were sold.
Will definately be a boon if they get busy again.
Hey don't be bashing Pittsburgh.... Once you live here, you tend to stay.
Google couldn't even get folks to leave town, so have decided to open a research facility here... so has Seagate... Town may not get a lot of respect, and it might not be flashy... but its a good place to live and raise a family... where you can ACTUALLY AFFORD TO LIVE... 100k salary in Pittsburgh is the equivalent of 250k job in Manhattan... You can't beat the cost of living.
I would provided they had a job I found interesting.
The American economy, trading assets for consumer goods.
For what they want, I think that is a requirement.
How long ago? They probably do, especially if you were an employee at that time.
I worked there for 22 months (moved in October) and the EC is filling up. They kicked Alleghany Power out of the west wing and are remodeling like crazy for the expansion, not only new employees, but also for a horde of Chinese that will be there for the design process for the 2 AP-1000's they expect to sell them. Since last January, Westinghouse has hired several hundred new college grads and old greybeards like me.
Well glad to hear things are getting better out there... I was definately there at the low point.
It has been about 18 to 23 years ago years ago (depending on which course). I was an employee of Carolina Power & Light (now Progress Energy) at the Harris Plant.
Not exactly true.
Many of us didn't want to leave, but didn't have much choice.
