COHOES, N.Y. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday the United States and all other governments should not recognize any Hamas-led Palestinian government unless the group renounces violence and recognizes Israel's right to exist.
Hamas, which has long supported violence against Israel, scored a surprising victory in this week's parliamentary elections.
"Until and unless Hamas renounces violence and terror, and renounces its position calling for the destruction of Israel, I don't believe the United States should recognize them, nor any nation in the world," said the former first lady, a potential candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.
"This is an opportunity for Hamas," she added. "If the election results hold and they are now responsible for governing the Palestinians, they have an opportunity -- if they renounce violence, if they recognize the existence of Israel -- to help provide a better life to the Palestinian people. I would hope that's the decision they would make, but it's up to them."
Clinton's comments came as she visited a pharmacy in Cohoes, near Albany, to continue her assault against the Bush administration's prescription drug plan.
Clinton is seeking re-election this year to a second term in the Senate and polls show her well ahead of any potential Republican opposition.
The Palestinian issue has been a thorny one for Clinton over the years, starting with her calls as first lady for an independent Palestinian state, a position that angered some Jews who are an important voting bloc in New York.
Clinton was flying to Fort Drum in northern New York later Thursday to see off soldiers headed to Iraq.
Pandering?..........nah.........
She's becoming quite vocal these days.
I would love to see her run and then get defeated by a large margin. I look forward to her speech and the look on her face.
You read my mind. Thanks for posting that.
Who the f**k is this "Hillary Clinton" and why does her opinion matter???
Oh, a junior senator speaks and it is news?
Does she have any authority to effect anything? No.
OK. Back to the real news.
Something tells me a clove of garlic and a stake thru the heart may be necessary.
PIAPS strikes again!...........
My thoughts exactly: who gives a flying f--k what hillary thinks!
Yup He did and Condi did too. Clinton is pandering to the right with Hamas and the left with Alito. She's all over the place like a cockroach running around.
Guess she didn't listen to Condi's comments earlier today, huh?
I was thinking the same thing. Why is she always getting quoted when you never hear a word from 95 of the other senators. My seantors from Texas are never on the news but about once a month.
She must have read the MSNBC poll...
Mrs. Bill Clinton is making a call that Condi Rice and the President get to make.
Hillary, your too small to fill either ones shoes!
Thank you for that link.
I need some enlightenment from the Buchananites. Does this mean she's sold out to AIPAC?
From this 2000 link:
Now Hillary Clinton has puzzled Jewish voters and friends of Israel with yet another stumble. The New York Daily News reported on October 25 that her Senate campaign has returned $50,000 collected at a Boston fund-raiser attended by Muslims and Americans of Arab descent. The First Lady posed for photos holding a plaque given to her by the event's organizers. It expressed the appreciation of the American Muslim Alliance for her human rights activism. Mrs. Clinton now says she didn't know the award was from the Alliance, even though the group's name was emblazoned on the trophy in large letters. "I get handed thousands of plaques," Mrs. Clinton now says. Alas for the First Lady, the American Muslim Alliance's national president, Agha Saeed, favors the Palestinian struggle for independence from Israel and believes the Palestinians "have the right to resist by armed force."
Anyone have a link to the pics?
