Unclear if Massachusetts Democrat has votes needed to block nominee
Thursday, January 26, 2006; Posted: 4:23 p.m. EST (21:23 GMT)
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. John Kerry has decided to support a filibuster to block the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court, CNN's Congressional Correspondent Ed Henry reported Thursday. Kerry, in Davos, Switzerland, to attend the World Economic Forum, was marshaling support in phone calls during the day, Henry said.

Meanwhile, Reid is on the senate floor begging Specter to let him surrender to Frist instead of his underling.....

Considering what a disaster Kerry has been for the dems, it will be interesting to see if any of them take him up on his idea.

Bah! Too bad Four Dems have annouced that they will vote for Alito. They'll have to get the rest rank and file.
Some of the Red State Dems wont go along with the Filibuster and I doubt Liberman will.

This is an outrage! I hope every democrat who stands in support of a filibuster loses their seat in reelection.
No nominee should ever be treated with such disgraceful behavior. Let the rats be warned, they will lose their influence if this continues. They will be like the who?---the whigs.

He doesn't have the votes to prevent cloture - even Senator Byrd has announced he will vote for Alito.

filibuster or no, this puts Kerry in the race for those moveon dollars that Gore seemed to have corraled the other day with his most recent ranting.
Can you imagine a gore/kerry ticket? Could there possibly be a worse nightmare scenario than that?

Let's do Kerry MATH.
55 GOP Senators. All will vote for Cloture. Not all may vote for Alito.
3 Dems will vote for Alito. Johnson, Byrd and Nelson.
2 Dems say they will vote NO on a Confirmation, YES on Cloture. Landreiu and Slazar.
THAT'S 60 VOTES.
NEXT!!!

Its not about who will vote for Alito, its about who will vote for Cloture. There are dems that will not vote for Alito, but will vote for Cloture (i.e Difi, etc).. If Cloture passes, you cant filibuster.

Feinstein will probably vote for cloture as well.
To: evets
I don't think they have the votes -- especially if Frist holds the Republicans together. Both Landrieu and Byrd have come out against a filibuster.
To: Tijeras_Slim
Correct. He waited until he knew there were sufficient votes for cloture and comes out in support of a filibuster. Only positives in it for him.
