The person who died in a single-car accident on county road S2 in the Anza-Borrego Desert on Tuesday night was a woman, 55, from Jiutepec, Mexico, the California Highway Patrol said yesterday.
At a border checkpoint on S2, U.S. Border Patrol agents asked the driver of a northbound Ford sedan, a 37-year-old man from Chula Vista, if they could check the trunk, according to the CHP.
The vehicle sped away and the driver apparently lost control of it between Canebrake in eastern San Diego County and Ocotillo in Imperial County. The car went into the desert terrain, hitting two big rocks, according to the CHP. The collision ejected the driver and three men and the woman, who were in the trunk.
The survivors had major injuries, including broken bones and internal injuries. They were taken to hospitals, two of them by ground ambulance and two by helicopter, a CHP spokesman said.
The driver is hospitalized and is under the watch of Border Patrol officials, officials said.
The S2 also is called the Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849.
They will all probably sue Ford now.

Four people in the trunk?
Talk about invading one's space!
Just using resources that Americans weren't using.
Mi Healthcare, Su Healthcare Amigos! The helicopters probably frightened the poor savages. I'd suggest loading them on a donkey cart. Oh , and drop them off at the border.
Sure, officer. Let's see...jack, tire iron, oil, illegal Mexican woman, transmission fluid...nope! Nothing unusual here!
The article doesn't make it clear that the smuggler driving the vehicle fled to avoid being arrested by the agents. A border patrol helicopter followed the vehicle and the pilot saw it crash and burn. Ironically, had the driver submitted to arrest, he would not have been prosecuted. Now, the he's going to get several years in the pen.
