Washington Post Editor-- As a military verteran, I am starting a grass-roots campaign that I plan to spread throughout the entire Washington DC metropolitan area: that is to have every single service member and veteran that currently receives the Post to UNSUBSCRIBE as a direct result of your callous, disrespectful decision to publish Mr. Toles' editorial cartoon on 29 January 2006. To place a wounded American soldier in the context of that cartoon was nothing less than a raging insult and a spit-in-the-face to every military member that has fought, is fighting or will fight for democracy. Can you even comprehend the pain that the mothers of every wounded service member felt when they saw that cruel cartoon? Mr. Toles may not agree with the war and he has his freedom of speech right to draw what he wants and you have your freedom of the press right to publish what you want -- but the active-duty service members, veterans and supporters have rights also -- and we will display our rights where it will hurt you the most -- in the profit margin. I think you will see how much of an economic impact that the miltary families have in this area. The only solution to prevent what I hope will be financial disaster for you is: (1) Mr Toles should publically apologize to all miltary members, veterans and the American public and explain that he was purposely disrespectful and cruel -- and that he will never draw anything again that degrades the sacrifices that our fine service members make (in fact- it may be best that he take a leave of absense for a while); (2) You, as the editor, need to apologize to the same in regards to your poor decision-making in allowing such a tasteless cartoon to be published; and (3) The owner of the Washington Post needs to apologize to all of the readers for allowing such poor performance and decision-making to exist on the Post staff.

Dr. James S. Wasek
Give 'em hell, Doc!
What was the cartoon?
T1B8ZS needed help posting but yall acted like idiots..PilloryHillory is working on it
Way to go, Dr. Wasek!!
What in the heck are you talking about?
I like Dr. Wasek a lot....even though I don't know him.
I did not see the offending cartoon. But I can tell you that Mr. Toles wouldn't lift a hand to defend his country. You want to make Toles angry? Defend your country. That, apparently, really angers him.
Putz.
When was the cartoon published? Can you post it? I have been a thirty year plus subscriber to the Post and If I agree with Dr. Wasek I will cancel my subscription and inform the Post why.
I'm also a veteran.
Strange is your language and I have no decoder.
Please, puh-LEASE let the Washington Dumb-As-A-Post decide to stand up for its "journalistic integrity"!
Thanks. There goes my subscription.
Huh?
Hey, if we are going to go apeshit over this cartoon, we are no better than the Muslims flipping out about the Mohammed cartoons... come on... sure, that cartoon is tasteless, but the artist has a right under the Constitution to draw it.
That is disgusting.
God Bless our troops.
Sadly, the Post has become more and more one sided in its news and editorial content. I no longer like to read it, and frankly, there is no longer a need to read newspapers. I spend a lot of time reading on the internet.
Wish I could help. However, I canceled my subscription to the Washington Lying Thieving Post over 10 years ago.
I guess I could subscribe again so I could cancel again. ;-)
>>Hey, if we are going to go apeshit over this cartoon, we are no better than the Muslims flipping out about the Mohammed cartoons... come on... sure, that cartoon is tasteless, but the artist has a right under the Constitution to draw it.<<
And we have a right under the Constitution to not give them any money to continue publishing this crap.
THAT my friend is the American Way.
The market drives the product.
Horsehockey! I didn't see anyone today or on yesterday's posts call for the assassination of the cartoonist.
come on... sure, that cartoon is tasteless, but the artist has a right under the Constitution to draw it.
Of course he does. And folks have a right to cancel subscriptions to rags that publish "tasteless" crap!
Good on you. What a heartless, tasteless, piece of cr*p. May karma bite them in a big way...
No, the Muslims are rioting and threatening violence, and I don't see any of that mentioned or threatened here.
And a cartoonist's right to speak is countered by everyone else's right to speak in return. And that includes patronizing (or not) the publication that printed it.
Is T1B8ZS your big brother?
While not in the DC area, my son is an active duty soldier in the general circulation region of the WaPo (Fort Lee, VA).
I will send this to him.
I not sure, if he subscribes. As a FReeper's son, I would expect that he wouldn't even steal a copy.
and subscribers have the right to cancel that f*ng paper.
I spent some of my active duty time there at Fort Lee about a hundred years ago. I enjoyed being there.

Thanks for the link Zacs Mom. This is what the poster was orignally trying to get posted here. He obviously got off to a rough start.
***** Letter from the Joint Chiefs to Washington Post regarding this tasteless, disgusting cartoon. (PDF File - You will need Adobe Acrobat to view this file)
Thanks for bringing it to our attention. All of us have had problems with posting something from time to time and when asking for help, have gotten flamed. Don't take it personally, you did a great job!
Bless you.
Although I do not subscribe to the Washington Compost I have cliked on thier site occassionally. I will not do that in the future and recommend that Freepers not post anything from the WaPo.
For me, I cancelled in 2002 when one of the Pravda-on-the-Potomac's editorial writers suggested stopping fighting for Ramadam.
How do you draw this comparison? Some FReepers have stated they'll cancel their subscriptions of the Post because of its offensive, treasonous (and dangerous) content. On the other hand Muslims are in the streets rioting, they are condemning and threatening Western nations with reprisals. There is no comparison to the two responses, one is healthy, the other is insane.
I too am a Vet and I'd never offer up a DIME, period, to the NYT, WP or LAT.
Therein lies one problem. We are "just the same as muslims"....except we're not killing anyone over this. We write letters to the editor, they try to kill people and sometimes they succeed.
Yep.....EXACTLY the same.
He also has the right to make fun of gay people dying of AIDS and of blacks being lynched. But I suspect a cartoon about those protected liberal victim groups would have never been published. And if a cartoon making fun of them had been, the cartoonist would have been fired.
The Post has the right to publish whatever they want. We have the right not to buy or support newspapers. It's that easy.
You are absolutely right!
But I have the right under the constitution to cancel my subscription to any rag that posts unpatriotic, tasteless cartoons.
After 8 years, I just canceled out my subscription the Washington Post!
Of course he does, but People have the right to cancel their subscription in protest. Thats what we do in America.
Just read the letter from the JC... that's awesome!
I would have to say that the cartoon is one of more tasteless things that I've ever seen published, and I've seen some tasteless things. The letter writer is correct. The cartoonist (and the editorial staff who allowed it) should, at the least, be ashamed.
No, no, no....they can say and offend anyone THEY want....and you have to buy it and say...nothing.
Didn't you get the rule book yet?
"Hey, if we are going to go apeshit over this cartoon, we are no better than the Muslims flipping out about the Mohammed cartoons... come on... sure, that cartoon is tasteless, but the artist has a right under the Constitution to draw it."
What a bunch of steaming horseshit. Guys and gals, witness what moral relativism does to the thinking process -- wipes it out completely.
Are there any calls for assasination of Mr. Tole? Threats of violence? Calls to boycott everything from Washington, DC? Calls for the government to censor the WaPo? No, on all counts.
Yes, the WaPo has a Constitutional right to publish whatever dripe they want to publish. However, their subscribers have a right to cancel their subscription in response. Apparently, though, you seem to think otherwise. Please educate us, then: Where does the Constitution mandate that people subscribe to a particular newspaper?
That 'toon is disrespectful though I'm not surprised the WaPo ran it. It fits their agenda. Hat tip to the Doc for the letter to the editor and the guts to stand up to such depraved crap.
Surely you understand the difference between what is proposed here and what would eventually happen in Denmark?
The press decided a long time ago to fight on the side of al qaeda.
Better yet. Unsubscribe and go after the advertisers.
NOW, can we accuse them of not supporting the troops?
Upset veterans are in no way related to Islamofascists who want to burn down Denmark. Did you see anybody calling for violence against the cartoonists? Did you see anybody calling for a boycott even? No, just people who are offended to express their displeasure by discontinuing their financial support of this heinous rag. That is hardly the same as calling for a jihad.
And you might want to check a little more into the Constitution if you think that the cartoonist has a 'right' to be unopposed when he does something which demeans wounded veterans who are protecting this 'right' to demean them.
