Bush: US would defend Israel against Iran

Posted on 02/01/2006 2:24:44 PM PST by MARKUSPRIME

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - President George W. Bush vowed on Wednesday the United States would defend Israel militarily if needed against Iran and denounced Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for "menacing talk" against Israel. I am concerned about a person that, one, tries to rewrite the history of the Holocaust, and two, has made it clear that his intentions are to destroy Israel," Bush said.

"Israel is a solid ally of the United States, we will rise to Israel's defense if need be. So this kind of menacing talk is disturbing. It's not only disturbing to the United States, it's disturbing for other countries in the world as well," he added.

Asked if he meant the United States would rise to Israel's defense militarily, Bush said: "You bet, we'll defend Israel."

If they want a long and protracted war in the ME, let them have it. But let's not use our boys to fight a proxy war that is not in the best interest of our country and our people.

That is idiotic. The war in Iraq is not a proxy war on behalf of Israel. Go to D.U. with moronic sentiments like thst.

You must be fairly young. During the cold war, the Soviet Union was providing significant military aid to many of the arab states. While we were not as dependent on foreign oil at that time, it would have been economic disaster for the U.S. if the USSR had a strangle hold on mideast oil. Israel was one of our few allies in the region at the time. Since then, time has only strengthened our relationship with Israel, especially considering their expertise on terrorism.

The US can and should defend many peaceful nations without whom they have a formal treaty. India, for example.

But more than that (and I hope you can agree with this) Iran attacking Israel would be put in the category of "bad thing". You do agree with that, right?

Don't be a Patsie, but if you are, consider that there might be Palestinians who might die as collateral damage.

It'd keep the region more quiet if the bombs on Tehran read "made in America".

Good evening. I read the whole thread before posting. Amazing.

A quote comes to mind, although I don't know who said it...Israel can be viewed from a national security perspective as the canary in the coal mine.

In my view, given the current state of affairs, my Jewish brothers and sister are running out of O2. Can't let that happen, especially from a biblical point of view. Otherwise, all bets are off.

"Bush: US would defend Israel against Iran"

Has our President really changed his mind on that? We can start by crushing Iran's Hamas and all of the terrorist organizations on its side of the fence! Send them back to their countries of origin!

"The scripture says "I will bless those that bless my people and curse those that curse thee."

Amen! As long as America stands by Israel (that's God's chosen people and HIS little slice of land), we will be blessed. The day we turn our backs on Israel, is the day America no longer has God's hand of protection upon us.

"With all due respect, U.S. taxpayers have no obligation to maintain any other nation's utopian economic delusions."

But we will continue to help Israel with weapons to destroy our Islamist enemies. And the following plan is being incrementally abandoned.

...as per our decision in light of the EU's utopian delusion for terrorists failing in Israel (election of Hamas).

The Sampson Option is a rumour with solid circumstantial evidence supporting it. The theory is that Israel has quietly conveyed to the Arab world, and terrorist groups like Hamas that: if it is ever attacked with any WMD, it will launch its entire arsenal of nuclear weapons at every major Arab city. In other words, if you kill thousands of Jews, we'll kill millions of Arabs.

Gentlemen:-I thank you with great sincerity for your congratulations on my appointment to the office which I have the honor to hold by the unanimous choice of my fellow citizens, and especially the expressions you are pleased to use in testifying the confidence that is reposed in me by your congregation ...

I rejoice that a spirit of liberality and philanthropy is much more prevalent than it formerly was among the enlightened nations of the earth, and that your brethren will benefit thereby in proportion as it shall become still more extensive; happily the people of the United States have in many instances exhibited examples worthy of imitation, the salutary influence of which will doubtless extend much farther if gratefully enjoying those blessings of peace which (under the favor of heaven) have been attained by fortitude in war, they shall conduct themselves with reverence to the Deity and charity toward their fellow- creatures.

May the same wonder-working Deity, who long since delivered the Hebrews from their Egyptian oppressors, planted them in a promised land, whose providential agency has lately been conspicuous in establishing these United States as an independent nation, still continue to water them with the dews of heaven and make the inhabitants of every denomination participate in the temporal and spiritual blessings of that people whose God is Jehovah.

G. Washington.

"The Jews have done more to civilize men than any other nation.... They are the most glorious Nation that ever inhabited the earth. The Romans and their Empire were but a bauble in comparison to the Jews. under what formal mutual defense treaty (e.g., NATO, SEATO, etc.) does the U.S. have an obligation to defend Israel?

I have to tell you that I just assumed we had a defense treaty with Israel. So far I haven't found it but I'll watch this thread for evidence.

I doubt very much they do. Israel and all other roque nations in the ME are not allowed to own nukes. And rightly so.

Israel is no rogue, if they were they'd have wiped out all the Arab nations decades ago. They've had nukes for at least 3 decades, maybe 4. Reports indicate that when things started to look ugly in the '73 war, they couldn't use their entire Air Force for tactical missions, because some had to be held back for the "final" mission.

Israel is a frontline ally. It is hardly in our interest for them to fall.
I agree with Alberta's child about aid to Israel, but the reality is that we have a defensive agreement with them.
We are all fighting Islamists.

PS. Tancredo would disagree with you on foreign affairs.

Israel is a solid ally of the United States in that it has stood with us against the Soviet Union and terrorism and shares our Western values.

You do not need a formal treaty to be an ally.

Genesis 12:2-3 - "2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

Yeah. I heard that already. So 'blessing' Israel translates into a obligation to defend them if they are attacked (which we haven't, by the way, done in the past when they were attacked), and not doing so is 'cursing' them. Gotcha.
