An aircraft carrier for China?
By David Lague International Herald Tribune

BEIJING As China builds a military to match its growing economic power, its neighbors and potential rivals including the United States have puzzled over a key question: When will the Chinese Navy launch an aircraft carrier?

Aren't they refitting that unfinished Russian job they got on the sly?
Ukranian carrier to be more accurate!!Yep,seems to be that they are doing something on the Varyag. The 2 carriers they got from Russia-the Minsk & Kiev, were smaller V/STOL ships which would have needed considerable Russian help to modify.

Oh boy! Bigger targets!
I was part of the task group that caught the Kiev as it came down out of the Black sea on it's maiden voyage, back in '79. Interesting ship, not a quick launching machine though.
Wow. Chinese carriers. Is it that time of year again? See you again in six months.
You are wrong. The Chinese call their boats "junk".
they would love to, but they cant. even if they do, it will be a money pit. building carriers is a national pastime which requires lots of money and experience. only the usa has both at this time. british carriers are good, but on the smallish side. frances carriers are obsolete. point being, carriers are like subs, very specialized in build, fitting, operation and will to deploy.
You're right, you got me. I'll be on the lookout for you next time. :)
What's the problem with destroying a Chinese ship? An hour later, you want another one.
So, what sort of disease are they spreading this time?:)-)=:
agreed, imo, owning aircraft carriers that can be effective is a mature military ideology. we have it, they dont.
My business partners daughter is an electronic weapons officier on a carrier now. She says they call destroyers "missle catchers".....
All good points... but the Chinese now have the technology to track our Los Angeles class boats, and they're beginning to put Aegis technology to sea as well (another technology stolen from the US).
Baby steps... but pretty damn big ones.
