HILLARY THROWS $UPPORT TO ANTI-ABORT DEM
NY Post ^ | 2/3/06

February 3, 2006 -- WASHINGTON — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton — who supports abortion rights and is the darling of pro-choice women's groups — gave $10,000 to a staunchly right-to-life candidate in Pennsylvania, The Post has learned.

Clinton ponied up the maximum donation allowed under the law to Democratic Senate hopeful Bob Casey, even though he has been skewered by pro-choice groups for his anti-abortion position.

It was the largest donation Clinton gave to any politician in 2005 and was made by her political action committee, HillPAC, records show.

The National Organization for Women and Emily's List — influential groups Clinton wants in her camp for her Senate race this year and possible White House bid in 2008 — are so anti-Casey, they've got an online petition calling on Democratic leaders to scuttle his bid.

The groups blasted Casey as "Republican-lite on women's issues," and slammed his candidacy as a "calculated effort by party leaders to build a so-called 'bigger tent' at the expense of women's rights."

They told party chiefs that "women are the vast majority of both the voters for, and fund-raising direct mail supporters of, the Democratic Party. We deserve better than this."

Casey, who is running against GOP incumbent Rick Santorum, also infuriated liberal Democrats last month when he came out in support of new Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, a top target of pro-choice activists.

Bob Casey is not "staunchly pro life." His stance on abortion is one of convenience, a way of getting elected. If elected, he'll march to the Democrat party tune.

This move would hurt her in January '08 but help her in
November '08.Like everything else she's said and done in the last 13+ years, this is a political calculation...a risk/reward deal.

i bet it's not an oops but instead it's on purpose. It's like her sponsoring censorship - she is trying to run to the center/right.

From the dailykos on the subject, from this link:

However, when it comes to abortion, Casey's voting record on judicial nominees will likely be one similar to liberal Democrats for two reasons. First off, as I mentioned earlier, he's loyal to the party, and if the party decides that it is in the party's best nterest to filibuster or vote against a nominee, then Casey will. Secondly, Casey won't have to look very hard to find another reason to vote against some of these nominees (and bills with anti-abortion restrictions as well). Remember, Bush's cadre of judges isn't just far right on the abortion issue, they're far right on labor, environmental and economic issues as well. A vote against is a vote against, even if it isn't based upon the abortion issue. A spinoff of the abortion issue is stem cells, and on that issue, Casey's position is about as clear as mud.

If true, no wonder Hillie's supporting him.

I'm not so sure about him not being whole-heartedly ant-abortion. Remember, his dad, while govennor, was not allowed to address the Democratic Presidential Convention back in 1992 or 1996, because he was anti-abortion and wanted the Democrats to hear the other side. He may have become very solid over that. We may know for sure later, though.

I believe you are wrong about Casey. His father was not allowed to speak at the dem convention that nominated slick willie because he was pro life.

Governor Casey was pro life and never waffled on the issue.

I doubt his son has a conscience of convenience on this issue.

Even if he has his father's views, he also has $10K of her money and she will not let him forget it.

Yea or nay, this isn't the smartest thing for Hill to do.

She needs to stay out of controversy and IMO, out of harsh lighting.

This is typical of Hillary!. She realizes that the Donks are on the wrong side of history on the Abortion issue, so she is looking to blur the line.

But, dollars to donuts, this fella would toe the party line if he ever made it to the Senate. The Democrats are looking to make inroads in traditionally Republican areas. Look for three different versions of stealth 'Rat.

War Hero Against The War 'Rat - Such as Paul Hackett
Evangelical But Still Pro Choice 'Rat - Such as Tim (The Eyebrow) Kaine
Pro-Life Until It Comes Time To Confirm 'Rat - Such as Bob Casey

I hope you're right (and I do remember his dad). But I also recall reading something lately that led me to believe that young Casey had morphed into one of those "opposed personally, but support personal choice" people. I can't say I trust him.

Not surprising, as it's a means to an end. She wants Santorum defeated, because she wants to re-establish a Dem majority in the Senate. Then it wouldn't matter one whit if the Dem Senator from PA was pro-life or not. The LEADERSHIP of the Dem party is staunchly pro-abortion, so that's what would matter.

Casey, a pro-life Democrat, would be the perfect Junior Senator from Pennsylvania, since we already have a pro-choice Republican, (Specter). (I'm still voting for Santorum).

This shows the beast KNOWS the crazy left can't and won't abandon her. It won't turn any conservatives toward her, but it will give her some talking points.

Here's an interesting tidbit from the American Thinker:

Hillary's $$ for anti-abortion candidate

Hillary Clinton donates money to anti-abortion candidate Bob Casey in the Pennsylvania Senate election. I wonder how EMILY's List people feel about this revelation?

Ed Lasky  2 03 06

Richard Baehr adds:

Casey's candidacy may collapse. This may turn out to be a shocker to Democrats who are counting on picking up the seat. Sen. Rick Santorum is a strong campaginer, and will be amply funded.

Ardent feminists may sit it out or find some green candidate to register a protest. Unity is not exactly a prominent characteristic of the squabbling Democrat factions.
