Hey GWB himself said Islam is a noble religion as recently as the State of the Union speech.

Sometimes I wonder about George.....

The phrase 'peace under islam' is as old as islam itself, I believe. It means that as long as islam is dominant, other religions can exist (the 'people of the book', Christians and jews) as long as they pay the tribute to islam and Christians and jews accept inferior status.

BTW, Powerline blog is saying this photo was actually taken in London.

Also Powerline's comments about the State Dept's stance are very good. Here's a snip:

The State Department says that publishing cartoons like this one, and even tamer ones, constitutes "inciting religious or ethnic hatreds." Why? These cartoons are very mild commentary by any standard. Compare them, for example, to the vile, anti-Semitic cartoons that appear frequently in the Arab press. The cartoons are said to be offensive because Muslims don't believe in depicting the prophet, even in complimentary ways. I can understand that. Likewise, we Christians don't believe in submerging crufixes in urine, and calling them art. So the Muslims can adhere to their prohibition; but if someone else chooses to draw a picture of the prophet--or, say, eat bacon--it should not be an occasion for threats of genocide. For the State Department to suggest that there is some shadow of legitimacy to the widespread, violent reaction to the cartoons is unfortunate, to say the least.

The letering on the signs is identical, and the wording was obviously not produced by somebody whose first language wasn't English. Also, the girl in the photo dressed in full-Islam mode doesn't look Middle Eastern - granted, you can only see her eyes, but her stance and expression sure don't look ME to me.

European Muslim-convert 5th column, anyone?

Totally agree. At least the Euros will now, I believe, have a different 'perspective' of what we're/they're dealing with.

"The god" (Allah) as a translation of the Greek "The god" (ho theos) (both equivalent to the English "God"),

"the god" (or allah), was a moon god found in the pantheon of pagan gods in pre-Mohamedian Mecca. Mohammed threw out all the other gods and kept the moon god, referring to him as allah, as I understand it.

Sort of like if some religion took over the Roman Empire and kept the god Apollo as God.

The place of Sun rise and Sun set

Till, when he [the traveller Zul-qarnain] reached
the setting-place of the sun,
he found it going down into a muddy spring, ...
-- Sura Sura 18:86

Till, when he reached the rising-place of the sun,
he found it rising on a people
for whom We had appointed no shelter from it.
-- Sura Sura 18:90

First: It is scientifically proven that the sun does not go down in a muddy spring.

Second: This seems to presuppose a flat earth, otherwise how can there be an extreme point in the West or in the East? It does not say, he went as far as possible on land in these directions and then observed the sun-rise or sun-set while standing at this shore. A sunrise there would be basically just the same as at any other place on this earth, at land or sea. It would still look as if it is setting "far away". It does say, that he reached THE PLACE where the sun sets and in his second journey the place where it rises.

See also the thorough discussion of this issue in Islam and the Setting of the Sun.

Furthermore: Yusuf Ali in his commentary reports that Zul-qarnain is thought to be Alexander the Great. And so does the "Concise Dictionary of Islam." Looking at verses 98-101, this would make Alexander the Great a Muslim -- 1000 years before Muhammad. Yet that is for sure not true. The history does not relate that Alexander the Great had any other religion than the pagan Greeks he came from and ruled over. This is historically blatantly false.

"As I mentioned earlier today, Europe deserves its fate -- In the 1930s/40s they did their best to completely eradicate a peaceful, productive religious minority - Jews - and now they've welcomed millions of fanatics who aim to destroy Western civilization - Islamics - with open arms. A confused lot, to put it mildly."

But...I thought we were supposed to look at Europe as more enlightened and cultured than we crass Americans...I mean, after centuries of unspeakable torture and murder by the heads of state throughout the continent they've come to their senses and realized killing babies is no big deal and killing murderers is barbaric.

You mean the greatness the U.S. has attained wasn't done by following the lead of Europe?

Now that's going to require a complete rethinking of myself as an American.
