The mere presence of a gun can deter crime.

I'm all for gun rights. But on a college campus?

Where do we draw the line?

Colleges are private institutions for a reason, and should be allowed to restrict certain "privileges" the rest of us have.

And for good reason. How many of us want our kids going to a college kegger before some yahoo pulls out a gun and says: "Hey, dudes! Watch this!"

My son's university has gun lockers in the basements of the dorms.

I did a search on Freep and could not find the reference to this poll.

Also, the names given on the paper's message board are not FR nicks.

I think though that the "online poll" has lost it's meaning. ANY interest group can influence ANY online poll, and without considerable detective work the poll runners will not realize it, except in the case where a small paper has a readership of 500 and 2000 people flood the poll.

I also think that some poll results are merely made up.

You can argue this both ways. But it must be said that the announced presence of "gun free zones" seems like an invitation to armed criminals, burglars, rapists, and what not. This is especially true of the politicians and administrators boast their political correctness by putting up signs saying that you are entering a gun free zone.

Thanks in large part, apparently, to a call to vote from the conservative Web site freerepublic.com, our poll question garnered more than 2,000 votes -- more than 90 percent in favor of the legislation.

Then, why the hell bother with any on-line poll, including yours? So tell me, if a liberal web site such as the DU had hammered the poll with their votes, would you be complaining like you are now?

Stupid is as stupid does. Why do you stupidly run on-line polls? If you would like polls with predictable results, then insist on members only with identifying info about the voter to go along with it.

Thinking back to my college days, I can't imagine what I would have used a gun for. I can't imagine what harm it would do either, so...

I'm all for RKBA, but as I sat in the foyer of my frat house one afternoon in 1982, a bullet came through the ceiling and missed me by a couple of feet. Some dumbass had been playing around with a .38 in his room upstairs and it went off. So I know from personal experience that some people simply aren't responsible enough to carry, especially at that age. I'd be in favor of a college requiring a CCW permit--or even requiring some kind of university evaluation beyond that--before allowing a student to have a weapon on campus.

This is hilarious. First AFRO figures out we freeped their silly poll, now these people. I'd say word is out that we are going to hit any silly online polls these 'newsoutlets' put up. LOL!

Even Wyatt Earp wouldn't allow guns in Tombstone, fat lot of good it did him though.

I missed the call to vote too!

But did anyone catch this idiot with a complete disconnect from reality?

I do not think that ANY student (high school and/or college) should be eligible to get a permit to carry a gun!

There are somethings that are or should be reserved for adults. -- brownark

So, no adults go to college? Gee - most public universities I know have large and growing "non-traditional" student populations - students who are beyond the traditional age of college students. I didn't know that those under the age of 18 could get a conealed-carry permit (isn't it at least 21 in most states with CCP?).

Well, when college students stop being the target of violent crimes maybe they might want to give up carrying weapons.
