The War of Civilizations rolls on (the one the Muslims live for, and that the West will not even acknowledge).

This is ridiculous! Let's hope it's a very short manhunt.

The fact that he was still alive is proof that we haven't taken the WOT seriously enough.

"Well you are completely wrong. The values of freedom and self-worth are changing the ME right before our eyes."

Hey, Dev.. I've been partially wrong before. But, let's look at the "progress" being made. The Palestinians elected Hamas, well-known for its campaign of violence and terror. And then there's Iran, who's leader calls for Israel to be wiped off the face of this earth and continues its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

I'm not willing to concede being completely wrong. Maybe President Bush hit the nail on the head in describing America as too hooked on oil. If we can make oil irrelevant or less relevant, perhaps we can make better progress?

Seems like a twisted path, if you ask me. Meanwhile, we need to deal with reality. And to me, that reality, despite having fought and continuing to fight the most successful unconventional war in history, means treating the enemy for what it is. Not some civilized members of society but armed combatant terrorists who must be done away with, with no quarter.

I fear the Middle East will continue to suffer from a tribal mentality and be afflicted with religious fanatics for some time to come.

Best,

Spotty

Great argument for the death penalty. They only 'escape' once.

But, let's look at the "progress" being made. The Palestinians elected Hamas, well-known for its campaign of violence and terror.

The fact is the Hamas elections don't change a thing. Nor do they represent any long term negative whatsoever (furthermore there really wasn't that much difference in terms of what the Palestinians were voting for in this election to begin with....that is the dirty little secret no one mentions)......But I'll grant you the Hamas elections were a boondoggle for deep thinkers who love to hear themselves talk on the daily TV shows.

The reality is the very ideas of freedom and self-worth for individuals throughout the ME is a very new concept. Both have for far too long been denied the citizens of this region of the World as I said before.

Those two values are our biggest allies in the GWOT (now and going into the future). That doesn't mean we will always agree with whom is elected....nor does it mean we might not have conflict with those put into office.

But the reality is over time those values of freedom and self-worth will continue to take root and grow....and from that real progress will take place. A new ME will emerge over time. It is already emerging to anyone who doesn't have blinders on.

In the long run those such as Hamas will not be freely elected. Not as the roots of self-worth and the true notion of freedom begin to spread (as they already are without question throughout the streets of Iraq, Stan and other locations in the ME).

The idea isn't to fight and defeat each and everyone of these evil organizations via only the military route. It is also to defeat them among their own people.

The very existence of organizations like Hamas, al Qeade, Saddam and even the Mullah's within Iran....they exist because the values of freedom and self-worth DON'T within their Countries.

A twisted path?? - Again, I couldn't help but suggest you are completely wrong. We are moving within the only path that assures both short and long term victory for ourselves (U.S.) and the world.

Additionally you just don't have it right in terms of who we are fighting. We are not fighting the citizens of these ME ....but the terrorists that hide among them. In some Countries they represent a larger portion but in the majority they are the minority. Does that make this GWOT difficult??...YES...does it make it frustrating at times??...Most certainly.

But we are fighting this war in a systematic and deliberate process that is assuring us victory. We have serious leaders in place who are not governed by polls or by armchair generals and for that the world is safer.

“The reality is the very ideas of freedom and self-worth for individuals throughout the ME is a very new concept. Both have for far too long been denied the citizens of this region of the World..”

I don’t disagree with this. And the imans who poison the minds of their mosques clearly share in the responsibility for that.

“But the reality is over time those values of freedom and self-worth will continue to take root and grow....and from that real progress will take place.”
…”The idea isn't to fight and defeat each and everyone of these evil organizations via only the military route. It is also to defeat them among their own people.”

You are much more optimistic about this than I.

How could that happen?

Very simple. They distracted their jailers by pointing to the sky and yelling: "Hey, is that a duck?"

Geez! A tunnel stretched 400 feet from the jail to a Mosque.

Possible inside job? Tunnels are underground. Unless there was a clear line of sight from an upstairs window??

Something does not smell right!

Smells to me like maybe the reporter got the direction reversed.

I'm thinking it's far more likely that the tunnel "stretched 400 feet from a Mosque to the jail."

why wasn't he executed?

Because it might have offended the Muslims.

70 meter tunnel is pretty serious

what did they do with all that dirt?

Has anybody done a dirt-check in the mosque's dome?

That would be most logical. If they were digging at the prison, someone would be bound to take notice. If the tunnel was built from the mosque to the prison, then no one could know until the tunnel was already created. Then they would just need to go to the mosque, and escape.

IMO it's very likely (as in "I can't really see how it WOULDN'T happen this way") that there was also an "inside job" component, so that the from-the-mosque tunnel-rats knew exactly where to have the tunnel terminate underneath the prison.
