The Valley's Not So Civil War [Libs vs Conservatives in Fresno/Central Valley]
Los Angeles Times ^ | February 5, 2006 | Mark Arax

Posted on 02/05/2006 2:22:23 PM PST by Jim Robinson

Ever since the twin towers came crashing down and the cloud of jihad fogged the land, the crop dusters swooping low over the San Joaquin Valley had taken on a new menace. Even here, tucked away in the farm fields of middle California, fear had settled into the ground. Harvest to harvest, one year to the next, we watched tens of thousands of illegal migrants stream into our vineyards. Not a single suicide bomber was among them. Still, we could never be certain whether it was our vigilance or just dumb luck that kept us safe.

~~ snip ~~

One Friday evening, as the nation debated whether George Bush or John Kerry would better keep the terrorists at bay, I came across a curious piece of theater playing out along the busiest intersection in Fresno. A group of anti-war protesters, no more than 50 by a generous count, huddled on one corner of Blackstone and Shaw, waving "Honk For Peace" signs. On the opposite corner, an equal number of evangelical Christians and right-wing Jews held up U.S. and Israeli flags and shouted "Jew haters" at the peaceniks. It didn't occur to me, at least not that first day, to stop my car and ask how a quiet vigil against the war in Iraq could be seen as an act of anti-Semitism.

Long but interesting story. Several FReepers and several events discussed where Fresno Freepers joined forces with the Central Valley Republican Jewish Coalition against the antiwar leftists.

Thanks for posting the article Jim... as a confirmation of the article I just heard Victor Davis Hansen speak at People's Church last monday evening... it was a great speech contrasting Western Civilization with other worldviews. The recent cartoon mess hadn't erupted by last monday night but VD Hansen practically predicted this and similar problems when he said that Islam is now turning back toward 8th and 9th century Islamic thought.

Hey Mods!

Indeed. I do suspect that the mods will deal quite harshly with this "Jim Robinson" fellow.

What continues to amaze me is that after viewing the images and concentrated hate from this primitive culture, everywhere, and the signs they display in reaction to cartoons, it amazes me that there are still presumably educated and rational Americans who believe absolutely that we can reason with these animals.

I can only continue wishing that a significant number of the clueless actually travel and attempt to reason with them. It's called natural selection...

Hey Stuart,

The Fresno Freepers want a tour of your farm. It looks interesting.

It is long and interesting, as you said. In reading the whole thing, I saw one confused author.

He doesn't understand conservatives, even as he does a reasonable job of writing about them.

..That all this could be seen and heard in the raisin capital of the world didn't strike me as unusual.

I reached the corner of Blackstone and Shaw, where the pro-war demonstrators hadn't staged a rally in months...

The tone of the article is revealing. The author seems to enjoy taking pity on the delusional "pro-war" raisin folk in Fresno. It was hard for me to read.

One time I listened to the President of Peace Fresno on a local radio program... you talk about irrational dribble!!! I called in and within a few seconds had that guy so spun it wasn't funny... he ended up turning on the host (another liberal disguised as a moderate). He wanted immediate withdrawal from Iraq and Bush to be prosecuted. Haha... crazy!
