Son of Ex-President Jimmy Carter Seeks Nevada Senate Seat

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) -- Democrat Jack Carter, the son of the former president, kicked off his U.S. Senate campaign Monday by calling for a return to "our American values."

Carter, a 58-year-old investment consultant in Las Vegas, is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. John Ensign in his first bid for elected office.

"The singular difference between the junior senator and me is he works for the Bush administration and I want to work for Nevada," Carter said at a union hall outside Las Vegas, accompanied by his parents, former President Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter.

"Common sense, honesty, integrity and a desire for good government. These are our American values," he said.

The former president did not address the crowd and told reporters his son "doesn't need any help from me." But, he added, he planned to help raise money for the campaign.

Ensign, who is seeking a second term, has a healthy lead in early polls and fundraising. He has raised $3.7 million in the election cycle to date. In 2000, he spent $4.8 million to beat Democrat Ed Bernstein. A spokesman said the senator would not comment directly on Carter's announcement.

Since October, Carter has raised $241,600, lent himself $25,000 and reported $223,600 cash on-hand at the end of the year.

Carter is the only Democrat in the race so far, although Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has considered running.

Carter worked for a short time as an attorney in Georgia before becoming an investment consultant. He also served in the Navy in Vietnam but was discharged in 1970 after admitting using drugs. Carter said he's not concerned that the administrative discharge will affect his election chances.

"I am who I am. I like who I am," he said.

Carter was in his late 20s when his father won the presidency in 1976. He campaigned for his father but did not live in the White House.

Oral History with Jack Carter

SPEAKERS: Interviewee – Jack Carter

JACK CARTER: And anyway, when I got to Idaho Falls, one of the things
that the Navy did in the interest of maintaining the moral purity of its people was,
they had a drug bust. And nobody actually caught me, some people had said
that I had actually smoked marijuana with them. And when they came to ask me
if that were true, I said that it was. Because it was. And also, threw in that I had
had a couple of LSD tablets and some THC, just to make sure that if I was going
to get – if I was on the borderline, to make sure I got out. And by the time they
got all that processed, it was good enough. So they were busting me out of the
Navy in a fairly mellow manner, about the time Dad was getting elected Governor
of the state of Georgia [laughing]. But everybody just assumed at once that I got
out because Dad was in there, and it never got to be a question.

Today, Amy Carter (she kept her name) lives a quiet life in Atlanta with her husband and seven-month-old son, Hugo James Wentzel.

Hugo? That's an unusual name to give to an American kid. Bet she named him after her daddy's compadre, Hugo Chavez.

Isn't there a "One Carter per Millennium" clause in the Constitution???

Well, there should be...

This idiot wants to become a Senator? They already have one idiot as a Senator in Nevada. I guess there is no limit on that. If there were, there would only be 50 US Senators instead of 100.

Title should read, "Carter carpet bagger annoys Nevada citizens with hopeless senate run".

I still remember his stupid father telling the American public, "We must all learn to live with less". What a moron, America is not about lowering standards or expectations.

Now his kid has been here only three years and wants a Nevada senate seat!
That puts him right up there with Hitlery for integrity, with any luck at all he will get less than 1% of the vote and go back to shucking peanuts in Georgia!

Nothing is better than beating Democrats when they think they are going to win.

That is, unless one of the defeats includes beating the son of a lib-retread.
