Wellstone was killed by the Democrats so that they could substitute a stronger candidate at the last minute (Walter Mondale) in an attempt to salvage the Minnesota senatorial election a la the New Jersey Toricelli/Lautenberg deal. Unfortunately for Paul, it didn't work. The Republican won anyway.
