A new site promises sophisticated home valuations and -- one day -- an end to 6% commissions.

NEW YORK (MONEY) - Say "goodbye" to appraisers -- and possibly real estate agents. At least that's the promise of Zillow.com, launched Wednesday, which is headed by the founder of Internet travel company Expedia...........

Plug in an address and you get a price.

You can even pull back to a satellite photo of a particular street, complete with price estimates for every house on the block. Those price guesses, which the branding-savvy Zillow folks call a "Zestimate," take into account the size of your home as well as past sales in your area. It also factors such general economic data as daily interest rates and housing prices in general.......

This is an amazing, free site. Satellite view of your street as well as the prices of all the neighboring homes.

amazing that the houses near me are $800k... these are 1 and 2 bedroom rundown houses squeezed in between bail bonds and a railroad... CA is not friendly to new residents like myself.

I think it is time to go back to the drawing board. The prices listed on my street were 30-50% of what homes are actually selling for.

Several have sold in the past 2 years so I would think they could get a good estimate.

Wow, just put in our house and it's exactly $1000 off from what we appraised at last week.

The more houses I look at the more I think the prices listed are from around 1990.

CA is not friendly to new residents like myself.

I couldn't qualify for a loan on my house if I were to buy it today.

I wish I'd known about this last month. I'd have been able to put the $350.00 I paid a professional appraiser to better use. You can't beat free.

My house
" Single 3 2.5 $67,800 1,872 11,925 1985 "

This is just the tax assed value (or supposedly 40%) of market. It's cool to have it looked up this fast but not revolutionary for selling your house. My zip code is the fastest growing house price area in Georgia so a tax assesment from a few years ago is not news.

Zillow. Makes me think of pillow. Maybe it's getting too late.

One thing it doesn't seem to know much about in my area, is the McMansions popping up all around me. Someone sells their little house for a pittance to someone else who razes it and puts up a McMansion. Haven't gotten anyone pounding on my door for that yet, but there is a real estate agent in the neighborhood who is VERY, well, motivated, she leaves gifts on porches about eight times a year, sends out calendars, keeps a large van parked in her driveway with her real estate firm's name emblazoned on it.

Agreed; did this earlier and the price for my house was quite off, for what it is, compared to recent sale prices in the area.
