..[f]ollowing Lowery's comments, George HW Bush helped dispel the tension by jokingly saying that his friend Joe Lowery almost always won the war of words when the two men had discussions during Lowery's visits to the White House.

What an absolute class act. Only someone with the true human warmth and dignity of President Bush's father could have reacted to such political savagery in such a disarming manner.

And then there is the president. When Lowery concluded his eulogy, President George W. Bush stood and embraced his verbal assailant. In my mind, at that moment, Bush rose to a new level of greatness...

Dubya's ability to turn the other cheek at times drives me nuts and at times impresses the heck out of me. This is one of those times where his ability to rise above the stench helped maintain what was supposed to be a dignified memorial service.

And I did not realize until this article that former President Bush had the horrible task of following that hate-filled, petty preacher.

Mrs. King deserved better than the crap shown at her funeral service.

Correct me if I am on the wrong track here, but just what as her focus been since 1968? Then, Mr. King was a respected man of the cloth who stood at the forefront of the civil rights movement, a man who earned respect, not because of his death, but because of his life.

Mrs. King? She died a multimillionaire, one who it seems was more interested in profiting from her husbands words then carrying on his cause. She was treated as royalty in Atlanta, including armed guards and limos paid for by the city.

I am not so certain that the adulations bestowed upon her are a result of her efforts as much as they are the result of a collective guilt.

Thanks for the ping, Coop. I didn't have access to a television during the service, so I have only seen and heard clips and read some of the live thread. I didn't realize the order of the speakers, either.

This is a wonderful article, and I thank you again for calling it to my attention.
