Cartoon rage ~ We need to learn a new word: dhimmitude.
Washington Times ^ | February 10, 2006 | Diana West

We need to learn a new word: dhimmitude. I've written about dhimmitude periodically, lo, these many years since September 11, but it takes time to sink in. Dhimmitude is the coinage of a brilliant historian, Bat Ye'or, whose pioneering studies of the dhimmi, populations of Jews and Christians vanquished by Islamic jihad, have led her to conclude that a common culture has existed through the centuries among the varied dhimmi populations. From Egypt and Palestine to Iraq and Syria, from Morocco and Algeria to Spain, Sicily and Greece, from Armenia and the Balkans to the Caucasus: Wherever Islam conquered, surrendering dhimmi, known to Muslims as "people of the book [the Bible]," were tolerated, allowed to practice their religion, but at a dehumanizing cost.
There were literal taxes (jizya) to be paid; these bought the dhimmi the right to remain non-Muslim, the price not of religious freedom, but of religious identity. Freedom was lost, sorely circumscribed by a body of Islamic law (sharia) designed to subjugate, denigrate and humiliate the dhimmi. The resulting culture of self-abnegation, self-censorship and fear shared by far-flung dhimmi is the basis of dhimmitude. The extremely distressing but highly significant fact is, dhimmitude doesn't only exist in lands where Islamic law rules.

There was no freedom of speech or the press such as we understand the terms in Europe. Frankly, the Europeans and the Moslem World now have and have always had the same standards in that regard.

The word "dhimmitude" comes from dhimmi, an Arabic word meaning "protected". Dhimmi was the name applied by the Arab-Muslim conquerors to indigenous non-Muslim populations who surrendered by a treaty (dhimma) to Muslim domination.

I think the Europeans have definitely gone farther than we have with "hate speech" laws and other pre-publication or prior restraints. They're terminally PC, which makes it all that much easier for dhimmitude to creep in.

That said, I have to admit that the Europeans have been much bolder than our press in publishing these things. The MSM here didn't show them, small "alternative press" things such as the NY Press pulled them at the last minute, and even college newspapers were restrained by college administrators from publishing them. Not an encouraging precedent, and one that gratifyingly convinced the Muslims of Western weakness.

I said the Europeans haven't changed at all. This is the European standard ~ still, every now and then you'll find their "newsies" stretching their limbs to do something free people might do, but they get slapped back every single time.

Right after WWII when we had the chance we should have IMPOSED a free press and freedom of speech on these people.

Our own "newsies" are not hyping the cartoons for a variety of reasons, one of which is they aren't all that edgy. Another is, press revenues are down ~ may be why you see more space used for this on the internet. And, topping everything, our "newsies" are so ignorant of Islam they still think the demonstrations have anything at all to do with these cartoons.

I think it's time to ask "why Denmark"? Were you aware they just recently turned down the asylum applications of 29,000 applicants, most from young Middle Eastern men?

They have them "housed" in a detention area (of unknown nature) pending deportation.

So why is it in a time when there's little generation of refugees little Denmark gets hit with something very much like an ARMY seeking entry?

What was going on here? Were Iran's Ayatollahs attempting a takeover by force of a Scandinavian country?

Like I said, it's not the cartoons.

Yipes! No, I certainly wasn't.

Personally, I think Iran is behind it, trying to distract from its nuclear activities. And trying to demonstrate that Islam has now seeded virtually every place in the world with mobs of crazed, blood thirsty adherents.

another Jihadi vocabulary builder:

TAQIYA

That's the word for the time-honored tradition allowing Islamics to
lie to infidels in order to spread Islam.

I chuckled when I heard about the German "conscience test" that the
German immigration officers were to apply to Muslims to see if they
agreed with the basic cultural tenets of today's Germany: education and
equality of females, don't beat your wife, etc.

Yes, they will lie to the Germans. Now, will they eat a foot long pork sausage?
