CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot a 78-year-old hunting companion during a weekend quail hunting trip after the man went to retrieve a bird and Cheney failed to spot him.
Harry Whittington, an Austin attorney, was in stable condition late Sunday in the intensive care unit at a Corpus Christi hospital, where he was flown after the shooting late Saturday afternoon at the Armstrong Ranch.
The vice president visited with Whittington and his wife before returning to Washington on Sunday. Cheney "was pleased to see that he's doing fine and in good spirits," said Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride.
Whittington sent word through a hospital official that he would have no comment on the incident out of respect for Cheney.
Katharine Armstrong, the ranch's owner, told The Associated Press that the accident occurred after Cheney, Whittington and another hunter got out of a car to shoot at a covey of quail.

Sally Whittington told The Dallas Morning News her father was being observed because of swelling from some of the welts on his neck. His face "looks like chicken pox, kind of," she said.
Emergency personnel traveling with Cheney tended to Whittington before he was taken first to a hospital in Kingsville and then transferred to Corpus Christi."
The left winger kooks are saying that news media are covering up Whittington real conditions.

The article had a friendlier photo of the Vice President than did other news outlets.
I bet Cheney shot him to keep Iraqi war secrets safe. You know that is the kind of crap you will see and hear.

Armstrong said Whittington holds no ill feelings toward Cheney and doesn't plan to sue. "Oh, heavens, no," Armstrong said. "This happens, and my God, I've never seen a case of hard feelings. I bet this would deepen their friendship."
There is no excuse for accidentally shooting someone.
Having said that, shooting one lawyer is a good first step.

The press is so miffed because they were too lazy to follow Cheney around. Even worse no one at the ranch thought to report him to the fourth column of government in time to get photos with Abramoff in the background. They haven't even checked on the politics of Mr. Whittington. I guess they will just have to make it up as they go along.
Charlie Gibson all but called Cheney reckless and said their story of how this happened was BS on GMA today.
The local radio news is now saying the "victim" is in intensive care. Anyone else heard this?

Mr. Whittington is in stable condition in intensive care. Probably there for observation due to his age.
If that be the case, then I would suspect some Corpus Christi local is up to no good & wants to leave the VP with a black-eye. The Corpus area is notorious for being a democrat enclave and they wont stoop too low to put some rumors out there.
