Thoughts on the Olympics (a quote from Bryant Gumbel)

Mr. Gumbel's statement: Because [the Winter Olympics] are so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like try not to be incredulous when someone tries to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the worlds greatest athletes, despite a paucity of Blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention.

Mr. Gumbel - who evidently spends way too much time thinking about skin color - has shown himself again to be the ignorant racist he is by erroneously deriding the GOP for what he perceives as a "paucity of blacks."
Please contact HBO at http://www.hbo.com/apps/submitinfo/contactus/submit.do?title=Real%20Sports&questiontype=realsports to let them know what you think about this.

Bryant Gumbel was so full of himself on "Today"...I think that's when I gave up watching any of the morning shows.

So Bryant is saying that blacks are the worlds greatest athletes, that whites simply can't compete with blacks in athletics, and that if you aren't black, you can't be the worlds greatest athlete.
I'm still trying to decide why you need separate men's and women's teams for Curling? If there ever was a sport where you'd think the sexes could compete equally, it would have to be one where you slide rocks on ice.
Rush Limbaugh doesn't like curling, although he did say that it was nice to see women using brooms again.

So, Bryant, let's take a peek at HBO's biggest shows. Sopranos are not exactly paragons of diversity. Deadwood, #%*#& &$%#% right again. Taxicab Confessions, maybe? Some other shows may have a couple minortities. And gee, isn't the latest lady in your life a white? Dang, Gumby-boy, you have been infected!

Well, like it matters anyway.. have to listen to the American fru fru figure skater trying to pretend he's some poofer bad ass and going to stick it to the red state republicans.... Of course he got his well worn rectum handed to him by the Russian anyway....
Or have another supposed "bad ass" talk his jackass game, only to watch him get DQ'd for missing a gate.
Hey guys, if you truly are as rebel and tough and all that other crap as you want to pretend you are... shut your damn mouth and let your actions speak for you... of course if you did that... you might actually win.
Trash talk <> Gold Medal... dumbasses.
To: DennisR
Well you have the Jamaican bobsled team, some figure skaters...so give kids from Chicago ski passes. Open a curling rink in Philadelphia. Invent a winter sport kids from low income families can get into. Like hickey bobbing on the back of cars. Go down the bobsled chute on Converse sneakers. Slush volleyball. There has got to be a way to make him happy.

Yeah, and I guess we can't look up to Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, because of the paucity of white faces in the NBA.
But setting that aside - Bryant Gumbel suddenly "going black" after all these years reminds me of OJ suddenly remembering his roots after he got arrested, or Michael Jackson suddenly getting chummy with the Nation of Islam when he was up on charges.

Anyways, what makes him think Blacks are naturally better athletes?
Blacks (those with origins in western Africa) may be able to run faster for shorter lengths, but that isn't everything in Athletics.

When you factor in the summer Olympics, i.e. the U.S. track and field team, you get a pretty nice balance of races (not that it's important -- the best athletes should be there, regardless of race).
It's the European teams from the European countries that are so enlightened, so superior in every way to us (/sarcasm) where a black face is not to be seen (with the exception of a few on the GB team), whether it's winter or summer Olympics.
Yet we're the stone age people according to Gumbel - go figure.

In Salt Lake, a member of the U.S. 2-woman bobsled team became the first black athlete to win a gold medal at any winter Olympics. But is it really that surprising that there are so few top black athletes in these sports? So many of them are "money" sports, in that they are very expensive to participate in at all, let alone enough to become world-class. Even team sports like hockey require specialized equipment that isn't always readily available -- at least other "money" sports like golf and tennis are so widespread that there's always a local facility somewhere, and only recently are we starting to see black athletes make inroads into those two sports.

I am not a regular on the slopes, but somehow, I don't really think you would see many blacks there. It is simply their choice not to participate in winter sports (with a few exceptions of course).

I saw the special on the skater, what a flamer! It's a wonder he doesn't leave a path of melted ice behind him when he skates. Did you notice the CCCP letters on his jacket when he was posing. Of course that's all he is, a poser. He should learn that it is impossible to pull off the tough act when you are a male figure skater and wear make-up, not to mention the rhinestone leotard.
I don't mind Bode because at least he is gracious when he loses and doesn't act like it's the end of the world. I was at a youth hockey game and some parents watching their 6-8 year olds could learn from that...

A one-time coworker said he and some friends got tickets to the 1976 Montreal gala. I think he said they ran in to
Gumbel and another NBC type on a subway train, and he was quite pleasant to talk to.
Maybe he's pandering to get a gig, or a bigger gig on BET?
Perhaps he's really mad that Couric is going to get to be the final nail, um, "anchor" in the coffin of CBS News?

Mr. Gumbel is a very little man ( in fact, barely a man). I remember the way he used to belittle a real man, Ronald W. Reagan, 40th President of the USA. Enough said!!
