Why weren't we informed? Isn't it obvious? (Mona Charen on Cheney)
Townhall.com ^ | 2/17/06 | Mona Charen

There are few less edifying sights than Terry McAuliffe in full battle cry. But alas there was no avoiding him after the Cheney hunting accident. There he was demanding to know why the vice president waited 22 hours before informing the press and shouting that if Al Gore had done something like this he'd be in Leavenworth by nightfall (a dubious if pleasing supposition). The White House press corps was even more insufferable. One reporter asked, "Is it proper for the vice president to offer his resignation or has he offered his resignation?" Another demanded, "Scott (McClellan), would this be much more serious if the man had died?" Our pressies asked dozens of questions about the timing of the disclosure -- some wondering aloud whether the White House purposely delayed the announcement to avoid its becoming Topic A on the Sunday morning chat shows. One particularly eager journalist asked, "Under Texas law, is this kind of accidental shooting a possible criminal offense?" The transcript does not indicate whether he was rubbing his hands together at the time.

Is there something missing in the mental architecture of reporters? When they get credentialed, do they lose ordinary human reactions?

An ordinary person, hearing about such an accident, would respond as follows: How horrible! Cheney must be in agony. What's the prognosis on Whittington?

I honestly don't see why it was so essential that the press be informed about the accident immediately. Admittedly, if the vice president had shot someone in the Oval Office, or better yet, in the pressroom, that would be a story. But these kinds of things happen all too often when people hunt. It is terrible for the two men involved and for their families, but it has zero public relevance.

notigar: "Of course it was an accident. who suggested otherwise?"

Well there was this guy:

notigar: "Think so? Have a drink, shoot someone, and see how many hours can pass by before you have to talk to the cops."

Think so? Have a drink, shoot someone, and see how many hours can pass by before you have to talk to the cops.

Backtracking BIG time, eh, notigar?

I suppose you're now going to claim that "Have a drink, shoot someone" does not imply that alcohol was a factor.

The beer with lunch 5 hours before the incident was NOT a factor, and the authorities have determined that it was not a factor.

Your mentioning the drink, followed immediately by "shoot someone," would never have been posted by someone who either knew the facts, or cared about the facts.

You're not as clever as you think you are, notigar. The transparancy in your efforts to make this into something that it's not is not getting by us here.

I will refrain from accusing you of being a DU troll, but I WILL say that it's obvious that you trust and quote the leftist MSM, and the likes of James Carville and Terry McCauliffe, and your goal here is obviously to cause trouble, and not to contribute information to the discussion. It's right here in black and white for all to see.

I am saying that that's how the cops see things. Try getting pulled over, and tell the cops you had a drink, but it was hours ago. They WILL NOT believe you.

LOL! Working hard at this one, aren't you?

The AP lies all the time. IF you were educated you would know that.

And even in the AP article, the explanation is given.

If you trust the AP more than you trust law enforcement...........well, I don't need to say any more than that, now, do I?

What I do want to know, is why any conservative is so anxious to make Dick Cheney into a bad guy here? And why this short delay in notifying a rabid, leftist media in order to care for the man he shot is causing you apoplexy? What's up with you anyway?

(btw, the number of posts you have here has nothing to do with whether or not you are a troll. You may have been better at it previously than you are being on this thread. Could be that your true colors are showing for the first time).

Not the first time he has been accused of one.

And that relates to the Vice President exactly how?

The people in the hunting party were not drinking.

(But perhaps your bad luck with the police explains your anxiousness to project your personal problems on the VP).

Why rush to help your enemies?

Dubya might have to give Cheney a Presidential pardon for shooting his friend before they leave office!

I love it when these guys (or girls, in this case), behave like trolls and then go into conniptions when it's observed.

When the sole purpose of a poster is to cause trouble, and when the trouble is accompanied by false accusations (multiple ones in this case, I might add), then the conclusion is fairly obvious.

I guess she'd had enough and began to fire back, at which point "Thymus" blows up and yells "don't you insult me!!," acting like a total baby wuss who can always dish it out but can never take it.

I heard that too, but then Mary apologized to the asshole and I turned the TV off.

It is quite silly to project juvenile behavior on a man of Cheney's age who also happens to be VP. If Cheney was out drinking, probably so was the victim.

>>>>I heard of a interesting statistic. More people die in swimming pool accidents than shooting accidents.

More people die from choking on food every year than die in shooting accidents.

Well, it was nice of the AP to make up an excuse while they were fabricating the story, wasn't it?
I'm not making anyone into a bad guy. It just smacks of special treatment. As an average citizen, I don't like it, no matter what party the person is in.

If VP Cheney were an 'average citizen' like you, this story would be nothing at all.........it would just be another hunting accident, and no one would think a thing of it. And if the press were comprised of people older than 13, the story would be over anyway.

Your trust of the leftist media is notable, however.

Should I have the misfortune of encountering you elsewhere on FR, I won't forget that you are mad at Cheney because he's more important than you are, and that you trust leftists more than you trust Cheney.

You're creating an interesting picture of who you really are, notigar....

I'm sure Cheney felt like crap, very depressed, after this happened. But he knows how Washington works. He should have had his office or the White House issue some kind of statement on his behalf just to get ahead of the press buzzards.

Well, we all know that 'silly' is one of the nicest things we can say about leftists, don't we? ;)

What's interesting here is that someone signed up on a conservative forum is doing the same thing.......
