U.S. Has a Rare Contender in Ice Dancing

TURIN, Italy - Put down the remote and find another time to wash those socks. After two decades of being the most skippable event at the Olympics, figure skating's ice dance is actually worth watching this year. For the first time since 1976, an American couple not only has a chance to medal in dance, Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto have an outside shot at winning it. "Any Olympic medal would be an amazing, amazing thing to achieve," said Belbin, whose silver with Agosto at last year's world championships was the first medal by an American couple in 20 years.

"In dance this year, anything's possible."

It all begins Friday with compulsories, which normally only attract hard-core fans, insomniacs or anyone wanting tips on how to make Mr. Blackwell's "Worst Dressed" list. It's three hours of 24 couples doing the same dance — over and over and over. Not familiar with the "Ravensburger Waltz?" You will be by the time compulsories end.

Watching male figure skaters is like watching a San Francisco bath house.

Let me be the first to say they're going to get screwed. A shame because they're a nice couple.

We saw Torville and Dean twice after they became pros. They were the only couple to win a perfect 10 in pairs ice dancing. They were an absolute joy to watch and we've never seen anyone come quite that close to perfection.

And I've forgotten the name of the red cape dance they did; he treated her as his cape and threw her across the floor. Amazing.

Yeah, they are a gorgeous couple. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm convinced that they'll either get nothing or else the judges will toss them the bronze to keep the Americans from raising a fuss about how corrupt the judging still is.

Good luck to them, but even if they were a guarantee of winning the gold it wouldn't entice me to watch the Olympics....maybe if they paid me enough I'd watch.

I watch it at during every Olympics and love it. There is no jumping and one doesn't have to worry about the contenders falling. And it looks like they have a lot of fun.

I think the routine where he treated her like his cape was called Paso Doble or Torro; I don't remember which.

My husband said this young couple, Belbin and Agosto, will be dancing between 8:00 and 11:00; so we'll look for them then and wish them luck.

Looking forward to watching them.

I think she is the one who just barely got her citizenship in order to partipate for the US.

The mens skating last night was a frenzy of flailing arms and jumps. The new scoring has taken all artistry out of the competition. Or the mens {and I use that term loosely}competitors were lousy.
