Matthews Insists Guest Agree this the Beginning of a "Big, Bad Year for Bush"

February 17, 2006

It wasn't enough for Chris Matthews to analogize the Bush administration to a family of Mafia killers. He had to call President Bush "Fredo," the weak brother. Matthews' theory was that Bush was unable to control Cheney's handling of the shooting incident in a manner similar to which Fredo was unable to control his wife.

As he amply demonstrated at his press conference today, Harry Whittington is not on life support, but Matthews was working as feverishly as an EMS on a heart attack victim to keep the Cheney story alive. And in doing so, Matthews managed to be ungracious to perhaps the most gracious man in America, the very same Harry Whittington himself. Said a sneering Matthews:

"They dressed up Mr. Whittington rather well with a lot of make-up he looked great, I'm glad he's back, but he walked right back into the hospital again. What was that? "

Chimed in a 'helpful' Margaret Carlson: "I think he had his PJs on underneath."

Matthews stuck his dagger a little deeper: "He reminded me of Chernenko [the moribund Soviet leader] voting a couple years ago in Russia when the guy goes into a room next door, they made it look like a voting station, and the guy goes right back to bed."

So intent was Matthews on spinning current events into an omen of an impending annus horribilus for President Bush that he wouldn't take 'no' for an answer from his other guest, Mike Allen of Time magazine.

Matthews tried painted a grim picture: "This sixth year [historically for presidents] is the real sixth year problem and here we have it being kicked off with gunfire, the Vice President shoots someone, by accident, and with lots of questions lingering about it. Is this the beginning of the big, bad year for Bush?"

When Allen answered "not necessarily," Matthews cut him off: "don't say that. Help me out here!"

They could, but they won't.

At least they are consistant.

Apparently, spitter Chrissy missed the fact the Mr. Whittington was released from the hospital today. If he walked right back into the hospital, it was to sign his discharge papers. These people are pathetic.

What Chris should worry about is Cable Danger.

NO..they don't..and that is why Chrissy has been non-stop on this all week.

In fact on the show tonight...he kept saying it was all about Cheney..and how much FUN they were going to have.

THEN, he has that STUPID group of MSNBC talking heads on, Joe Scarborough, Tucker Carlson, and Ron Reagan...

Tucker Carlson is the ONLY one on the show that tried to put the shooting in perspective...and he was pretty well chided by the rest..even though even HE made the comment that he didn't see why Cheney would go hunting "right after drinking beer"...

which we know is NOT the case...so, even though he tried to talk it down...he misrepresented the facts...sigh

And Big Stupid Government has never stolen and spent more! Hooray!

I sure agree with you.

What I can't figure out is a week or so ago Chrissy started leaning to the right and the lefties jumped all over him.

Now he is back to the left again.

Maybe he hasn't got his "sea legs" under him yet.

Matthew's mouth always worries me. When I was a kid, I had an uncle who chewed tobacco, so I know that look.

I picture Chris waiting for the end of his show so he can go stuff another plug of RedMan chewing tobacco in his mouth.

One of my cousins and I were fooling around on my uncle's farm and came across a mouse nest with little hairless pink baby mice in it. Uncle Frank had fallen asleep in his chair on the front porch so we decided to get his pouch of chewing tobacco, put the baby mice in it and sneak off into the bushes to see what happened next. It didn't take long for the events to unfold...I guess he wasn't watching as he reached into the pouch because it was the only time we ever saw him spit the tobacco (and a baby mouse) out before chewing.

He changed brands and never bought RedMan again.

I think he's warning us that Bushes honeymoon with the press is over, so we may see a negative article or two coming down the road. Toughen up, we knew it couldn't be all hugs and kisses between the Bush administration and the mainstream media forever, it may even affect the positive relationship Cheney has always had with the beltway media.

Maybe this is minor. Why didn't we hear about UAE buying and controlling US ports before it was smothered in the same week during the Cheney accident coverage?

Sharp as always, sleuth. I caught that. Tucker may have a different bias than Hissy, but he isn't any better at getting the facts. These people are pathetic.

I was up - tossing and turning, and surrendered - around 4am this morning, and began channel flipping.

Imus had Chrissie on, and the albino swore to the prune that he was personally gonna make sure this "story" keeps it's legs another week or so.

(I should just pass over MSNBC during such times...it's really just the "DNC Talking Points Hour", with old Imus doing nothing but drooling and having his chats with his press buddies.)

My perspective on the Cheney incident is that it was handled perfectly. Sure, the MSM desperately desires that they could have had at Cheney moments after the accident occurred, but Cheney is far too compassionate to put his dealings with the media before the health and welfare of his hunting companion, and he is far too intelligent to throw himself to the wolves.

Listen closely to the MSM and the 'Rats and what do you hear? One mantra is that "the VP should be held to a higher standard than what is required under the law." Interestingly, the mantra was just the opposite when a 'Rat P chose to perjure himself and encourage others to do so for him, and when a 'Rat VP chose to claim the absence of a legal authority concerning shaking down foreign nuns for illegal campaign contributions. However, the facts of the Cheney incident show that he did hold himself to a higher standard than the law. TX law has no requirement for law enforcement to be notified, yet Cheney's party notified local law enforcement the day of the accident.

From what I can tell, Cheney has emerged from this smelling of roses, while the MSM and the 'Rats continue to look like fools as they play their game of sandbox politics in the public eye. Sure, Cheney screwed the pooch big time. I'm sure his male pride took a serious hit upon causing a serious accident that required violation of some basic rules of firearm safety. However, he didn't break the law, he didn't abandon his companion, he didn't dodge responsibility, and, fortunately, his official duties don't require him to be carrying a shotgun on the job. I can only hope that the 'Rats and the MSM will continue to bellyache about this, as the more they do the better Cheney and the 'Icans look.
