Ohio just stuns me. Yes the turnpike is better, but 75 and 71 are always under construction and the project around Toledo has had traffic tied up for years. I was honestly looking for Ohio on the worst list.

I've discovered one sure fire way to find out if the drivers in any particular area are courteous or not.

When a sign appears notifying drivers of a lane closure ahead the courteous drivers will leave that lane early on. That happens in Buffalo, Rochester, Central PA, all the time.

The areas where everyone drives like maniacs is where the drivers refuse to leave a closed lane until the very last minute. It's like a war game. Boston, New York, and most of New Jersey come to mind.

The states with the worst roads are: 1. Pennsylvania 2. Missouri 3. Louisiana 4. Michigan 5. California

As a Pennsylvania resident I'm shocked, offended, dismayed, and not the least bit surprised.

It's interesting to note that there is no correlation whatsoever between highway taxes and road quality as judged by this survey.

Interesting also that the same truckers who are responsible for the poor condition of the roads are so critical about them...
Maybe they could take a look at the relationship between truck weight limits and road condition.

PA has almost as many deer carcases as it does potholes.

"If Virginia has some of the best roads, then why is the General Assembly bent on raising our taxes to deal with roads??????"

Apparently, you don't live in Northern Virginia.

I can vouch for Missouri. Cow trails with tar in most areas of the state.

In Pennsylvania, driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

"Interesting how TX with lower taxes has better roads. How TX with lower taxes has an improving school system and is making big improvements.

Geeee, here I thought that more money, more taxes, equals better government and services!"

Here let me tell you 'bout another coincidence:
our road construction crews aren't unionized, and neither are our teachers.

Funny, isn't it?

Virginia drivers are generally pretty good, as long as you're not out in the country stuck behind the stereotypical old-man-with-a-hat doing 25 mph in a 55 zone on a two lane with "NO PASSING NEXT 21 MILES" signs. They do exist.

ROFL!!!! Sounds like my neck of the woods!

"The city of Houston has the worst roads that I have ever driven on, so that taints Texas as having great roads IMO."

I'm sure you know this but, Houston is a city, and this story was about states...

I did live in NOVA for 5 years.
The whining about the state of the roads in NOVA has been going on as long as I've had a driver's license (which is more years than I'd care to admit). Frankly, I'm sick of it.

Going up interstate N-83 in Maryland ... you could drive it blindfolded and know when you had crossed into PA.

No one is denying that transporation/roads suck in NOVA. That will always be the case. You build more roads, you attract more people. The problem will never be completely solved.

HOWEVER, iceskater's point is well taken, WE DON'T NEED a tax increase to deal with roads. We need better spending priorities and better accountability.

Kaine and the RINOS are hellbent on taxing us to death, and IT'S NOT NEEDED.
