'Monster' Cat In China Weighs 33 Pounds

POSTED: 6:16 pm EST February 20, 2006
UPDATED: 6:32 pm EST February 20, 2006

A 33-pound cat in Qingdao, China, is being described as a "feline monster" because of its 31-inch waist and large size, according to a report.

The 9-year-old cat from the Shandong Province is so heavy it needs the help of its owner to get onto a bed. However, the cat is in surprisingly good health despite its weight, Local 6 News reported. The cat's owner said it has no interest in eating fish but prefers to eat six pounds of chicken and pork each day.

This fat cat is not alone in his weight problem, according to the report. Obesity has become a serious problem for the modern cat, primarily due to a lack of exercise and a richer diet. Cats are susceptible to a range of illnesses including kidney trouble and diabetes, if they are allowed to remain overweight.

The grey cat is just beautiful.

That's the psychotic one. The fat one's too lazy to go nuts and romp all over the house chasing invisible flies at 4AM.

We have two Maine Coon cats, and the bigger of the two is about 25 pounds. He's a little chunky but not *that* fat. He's big enough that when he sits on his haunches and stretches (which he likes to do) he can hook his claws on my belt, and I'm 5'11". He's just plain BIG.

Male Maine Coons can easily break 20 pounds, and the breeder we got him from in Georgia has a couple others of around the same size. He's not bright (OK, he's dumb as a post) but he's our lovable lunkhead.

Makes Ted Kennedy look downright svelte...

No. No it doesn't. Blue whales don't make Ted Kennedy look svelte.

A good friend of mine was Bob Martwick, owner and trainer of the famous feline, Morris the Cat.

Bob owned a kennel in Lombard, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. I used to pop into Bob's office every now and then. Usually snoozing on his desk was Morris. Took up half the desk. Morris was one big, lethargic cat, although nothing like the Chinese tabby in this article.

Bob liked to have an adult beverage or two at the bar of a local eatery. He'd put Morris on the bar stool next to him and Flaherty, the bartender, would fetch a little bowl of cooked chicken livers from the kitchen.

Morris would put his paws up on the bar and start eating the meat, in his trademark finicky way, of course.

I always loved to see the old neighborhood drunks who would walk behind the row of bar stools, see the cat slurping something, walk on......and then in the classic double-take maneuver, stop cold, take another look and then resumine walking on, shaking their heads and virtually pinching themselves.

Sometimes Bob would leave Morris sleeping (as he usually was) in the restaurant's dark parking lot in the back of his station wagon till closing time. I asked him if he wasn't afraid someone would steal his meal ticket. He shook his head and said no, there's no amount of insurance he could afford that could ever be enough to replace Morris.

I have a nice photo of myself cradling Morris, a task in itself as he weighed a ton. However, he was half asleep (as he usually was) and offered absolutely no psychodynamic resistance when I picked him up, LOL.

Morris was known in the trade as the "Clark Gable of Cats". Believe me, there was no resemblance at all. Oliver Hardy, maybe, but not Clark Gable.

Morris might have been fat, but he had a deadpan face that was all enchanting....when he was awake, that is (which he usually wasn't).

Hi All-

I wouldn't trust a 30+ pound cat roaming around my home. They're completely unpredictable and want to do things on their terms as it is. Domesticated cats are still a bit too predatory for me to be comfortable with one this large running around the home.

My reliable dog wouldn't turn on me in a million years, but I can't say the same for my flaky cat.

The Michael Moore of the feline world. What the owner is doing is animal cruelty.

Lack of exercise? A cat???

I guess kitty's been spending too much time on the X-box.

You know, about two years ago I got a fortune cookie that said "Always follow the dictates of the collective." I'm still baffled.

I'm surprised there was no follow-up fortune that said you were going to be assimilated! ;-)
