Supreme Court OKs Hallucinogenic Tea

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Tuesday that a small congregation in New Mexico may use hallucinogenic tea as part of a four-hour ritual intended to connect with God.

Justices, in their first religious freedom decision under Chief Justice John Roberts, moved decisively to keep the government out of a church's religious practice. Federal drug agents should have been barred from confiscating the hoasca tea of the Brazil-based church, Roberts wrote in the decision.

The tea, which contains an illegal drug known as DMT, is considered sacred to members of O Centro Espirita Beneficiente Uniao do Vegetal, which has a blend of Christian beliefs and South American traditions. Members believe they can understand God only by drinking the tea, which is consumed twice a month at four-hour ceremonies.

New Justice Samuel Alito did not take part in the case, which was argued last fall before Justice Sandra Day O'Connor before her retirement. Alito was on the bench for the first time on Tuesday.

to "religious" groups who's stated goal is to convert us or kill us.

Too late Muslims are already here and in Dearborn, MI they sound a very loud public siren calling them to pray that others are forced to listen too

With regard to ayahuasca, there's an interesting connection with the Bronfman family of Seagram's fame -

Yep, it's definitely still wine. I just asked someone who received Communion a couple weeks ago.

The people themselves have full power restrict what the government can do, as they have with the Federal Government. My comment was not intended to suggest that the people could not prohibit a legislature from passing such a law as they did the Congress.

I can see them trying that here in the Flathead.

There would be bullet riddled Sirens within 24 hours.

Probably.

It didn't make it through the glass --- just smashed it in real bad. I was going north of 70, just took my foot off the gas long enough to push it back in place (sort of) and kept going.

First day of hunting season and they were all stirred up.

Good. Hopefully this is one more nail in the coffin of the failed war on some drugs.

Brazilians have been blending Christian beliefs with just about anything coming down the pike.
Macumba which has been around since the 1500s , is a mixture of African spirit worship and the Roman Catholic church.

That's one of the reasons I love Montana!

LOL

Just make sure that what's in Missoula & Big Sky doesn't spread into the rest of Montana

"A year later the Rutles were caught up in another scandal. In the heady atmosphere of San Francisco of the mid sixties, Bob Dylan had introduced the Rutles to a substance that was to have enormous effects on them: Tea. They enjoyed its pleasant effects, despite warnings that it would lead to stronger things, and it enormously influenced their greatest work, Sgt. Rutter's Only Darts Club Band. "

Agreed. This could also be a big boon to the Rastafarian religion!

Every time I see a story like this, I get re-inspired to start my Church of the Holy Centerfire Cartridge. Requires you to carry at least a handgun at all times (citing Jesus' "if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one") for personal protection, and fully-automatic weapons for home defense and religious observance. Seems like I'd be able to protect my 2nd rights by broad interpretation of my 1st.

"I don't believe that's true, churches use grape juice"

Some churches use grape juice. Others use wine. The Roman Catholic Church uses wine.

You really can't base such broad statements only on your personal experience.

My comment was not intended to suggest that the people could not prohibit a legislature from passing such a law as they did the Congress.

My heartfelt apologies for interpreting it as such.
