Supreme Court OKs Hallucinogenic Tea

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Tuesday that a small congregation in New Mexico may use hallucinogenic tea as part of a four-hour ritual intended to connect with God.

Justices, in their first religious freedom decision under Chief Justice John Roberts, moved decisively to keep the government out of a church's religious practice. Federal drug agents should have been barred from confiscating the hoasca tea of the Brazil-based church, Roberts wrote in the decision.

The tea, which contains an illegal drug known as DMT, is considered sacred to members of O Centro Espirita Beneficiente Uniao do Vegetal, which has a blend of Christian beliefs and South American traditions. Members believe they can understand God only by drinking the tea, which is consumed twice a month at four-hour ceremonies.

New Justice Samuel Alito did not take part in the case, which was argued last fall before Justice Sandra Day O'Connor before her retirement. Alito was on the bench for the first time on Tuesday.

The people themselves have full power restrict what the government can do, as they have with the Federal Government. My comment was not intended to suggest that the people could not prohibit a legislature from passing such a law as they did the Congress.

well the good news is that at least Roberts gets it.The constitutiuon means exactly what it says in simple english sentences that bodes well for any 2cd amendment challenges.im pleasantly suprised whats really shocking is all the supremes got it on this one case.This may be one of the signs of the coming apocalypse.:-)

Every time I see a story like this, I get re-inspired to start my Church of the Holy Centerfire Cartridge. Requires you to carry at least a handgun at all times (citing Jesus' "if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one") for personal protection, and fully-automatic weapons for home defense and religious observance. Seems like I'd be able to protect my 2nd rights by broad interpretation of my 1st.
