Frist Calls for Halt to U.S. Ports Deal

Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist called Tuesday for the Bush administration to stop a deal permitting a United Arab Emirates company to take over six major U.S. seaports, upping the ante on a fight that several congressmen, governors and mayors are waging with the White House.

"The decision to finalize this deal should be put on hold until the administration conducts a more extensive review of this matter," said Frist. "If the administration cannot delay this process, I plan on introducing legislation to ensure that the deal is placed on hold until this decision gets a more thorough review."

In the uneasy climate after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Bush administration decision to allow the transaction is threatening to develop a major political headache for the White House.

"I'm not against foreign ownership," said Frist, "but my main concern is national security." He was speaking to reporters in Long Beach, Calif., where Frist was doing a fact-finding tour on port security and immigration issues.

Let's see if the President digs in his heels, like he did at first with Harriet Miers.

"Frist's move comes a day after two Republican governors, New York's George Pataki and Maryland's Robert Ehrlich, voiced doubts about the acquisition of a British company that has been running six U.S. ports by Dubai Ports World, a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates."

Sometimes I'm just amazed at how dense our leaders are. Bush actually thought this would fly?

The problem is simple, most non-brain dead Amaricans realize Islam is our enemy and any country that hosts them/supports them is a HUGE problem. This means Saudi as well. The last thing Americans want is to give ANY middle eastern nation (Israel exception) access to our country in any way, shape or form.

Wake up.....

MNJohnnie, I'll save you the trouble.

"The people who ACTUALLY know the facts like DHS etc are being laughed at or ignored so supposedly "Conservatives" can gleefully push Democrat Election Campaign propaganda. Simply amazing how willfully ignorant some "Conservatives" are about how the Junk Journalists lie to them. Just like Flush the Koran, Rather Gate, Fitzmus, Downing Street Memo and dozens and dozens of other LIES manufactured by the DNC and fed to the Failed Media, THIS story is a LIE."

Frist is playing to the media. He has no direction and is blowing in the wind. He is running for President. (God help us) Those buying into this media frenzy are silly. Look into the facts here. Does anyone other than a DemonRat or a MSM agent think Bush is THAT stupid or would jeopardize this country?

Well, Frist once again shows that he's a Fox News sock puppet.

Want Frist to support outlawing hubcaps because they cause cancer? Get Fox to do tag-team coverage...

Ping. It appears that the Republican leadership is asking for scrutiny on the deal. And Jimmah Carter thinks it has been adequately scrutinized. Who would have thought?

Golly, should you be attacking your fellow Republicans? You're just dividing the party. You're going to get Hillary elected.

Is there anywhere on the web that details the scope of services on this outsourced deal? It seems like the 'scope' is undetermined and thus the concern.

Are you sure you want to be on the same side of the issue as Jimmy Carter on this one?

...On the other hand, if there's a good expose explaining why the admin made this deal, I'd like to read it.

Actually, Carter's agreement with Bush on this gives me more fodder to believe that this is a flawed decision. Although I didn't need Carter's input to bring me to that conclusion.

The other connection is David Sanborn, who runs DP World's European and Latin American operations and was tapped by Bush last month to head the U.S. Maritime Administration.

Interesting tidbit. Considering that the defenders have been saying the deal was basically done 'in committee' and GW had no direct knowledge that an UAE company was being chosen.

hmmmmmm.

This is turning into another fiasco, reminiscent of the Miers nomination. If the Administration didn't see this avalanche of protests coming, they are definitely out of touch with real America.

I haven't seen any, but I may have missed it. Seems to me, a lot of background information is strangely missing.

Thank you!

Let me know when the hordes around here throw you out on your "Bushbot" keister, and we'll go have a beer. An imported beer! [gasp] Maybe one from Saudi Arabia!!

Oh, wait... :-)

Not knowingly. But Bush's strategy involves placating the moderate Arab states, like Dubai. The problem is, what if that government isn't so friendly in the future. I just think the policy is a bit short-sighted.

It looks like a poster by the name of 'paclevi' has posted some great background stuff. In it, it looks like security ops are NOT part of the scope of the outsourcing. If that's the case, I don't see the reason for hysteria like we're seeing.
