As of late though, a lot of blue moons seem to be appearing since common sense stuff is becoming more prevalent.

“This program was a good idea in theory, but there have been issues with implementation,” Nicely said.

It's great they are stopping this ill-advised program. But from a comment like this, you see it has the possibility of flying through the window on another day.

This was just coming into law about the time I was moving away from Nashville, and I remember the anti-GOP "racist" claims from the press.

The story behind this story is that Democrat Bredeson was stuck between his constituents fearing the next terrorist attack by fanatics found with Tennessee licenses on them and the powerful lobbying of the auto insurance and cheap labor industries. They settled for the compromise of the Certificate program, which required all non-citizens (even legal ones) to obtain this card which SHOULD have stopped the illegals from other states from traveling to Tennessee to obtain legitimate documentation.

It turned out that, despite the bold lettering on the card, businesses and government entities eager to transact with the holders ($$$) totally disregard the lettering and honor it as a legitimate ID anyway. Laws without enforcement only encourage corruption.

It has become an in-state joke of sorts that if a Tennessean has to renew their license at a station they should bone up on their Spanish if they wish to communicate with all the illegals lined up there. We also know going there means a whole work-day is blown due to the glut of invaders standing between citizens and the renewal of their licenses. Did I mention the motor-voter booth?

Add in the preference of most of these document holders to pick up a legit Tennessee license plate with it during their stay here and a whole new illegal magnet was born. As Freeper "I Still Care" suspected, many DUI accidents are being disproportionately caused by illegals (who shouldn't drink at all if they possess the Indian alcohol-intolerance gene trait). South Carolina reports that almost every case of DUI accidents where illegal aliens are at fault finds their vehicles sporting Tennessee license plates.

I renewed my license in NC the other week. Almost everyone there was either chinese or latino. Very few spoke much English. None of the employees spoke anything but English. It made the lines take twice as long as they normally do.

There were recent articles about how more than half of recent fatal accidents in this county involved Tennessee license tags, and most were DUI.......

Your statistics are mind-boggling. Why don't we hear about this in the MSM? (Rhetorical question, of course.) I am absolutely stunned that this is so hushed up. Who is it that is profiting so much from the illegals that it is worth such a great cost in innocent lives and national security to them?

Driver's certificate program reopening
State had stopped program for legal immigrants after questions arose

By Associated Press
March 4, 2006

KNOXVILLE -- The state will resume issuing driving certificates to legal immigrants Monday.

The program was halted last month because state officials said they couldn't be sure the documents were going only to immigrants living in Tennessee.

Driver's certificates will be available only to people who have papers indicating they are in the U.S. legally. The state has indefinitely suspended driver's certificates for illegal immigrants.

"We're not sure if the program will be revised or scratched," said safety department spokeswoman Melissa McDonald. "The review is barely under way and may take several more weeks."

The program that began in 2004 was shut down by state officials after federal investigations found bribes to state license examiners and black-market shuttles bringing out-of-state immigrants to apply for the certificates. The state issued about 51,000 driver's certificates before the program was halted.

Advocates for immigrants say the change could mean more untrained and uninsured immigrant drivers on the road.

"With the certificates, people were prepared, tried to be safe on the roads and had insurance, but we're going to lose that," said Lourdes Perez, director of Hispanic Catholic Ministry in Knoxville. "Just because they won't be able to get a certificate doesn't mean people are not going to drive."
