new Canon imageCLASS D320 hooked up to a POS Compaq running MSWin98 second edition 4.10.2222A

the Compaq will not recognize the USB connection no matter what variation of the install routine I try.

yet... it "sees" the copier under hardware profiles.

what gives?

to the best of my knowledge, yes.

in my *infinite* wisdom, I decided to bring a USB flash memory device, just in case you asked me that question. ;)

shall I test it now?

ok
immediate response:
new hardware detected
building new device database

second response:
[add new hardware wizard] the wizard searches for new drivers for: "Dell Memory Key" yadda yadda...

shall I [next] it and see where it goes from here?

Joy. Isn't Win 98 fun? 98 had issues with usb implementation, there were many patches and updates. Have you tried going to MS and doing a search/download of the latest/last usb drivers for win 98se?

I did a full windows update when I booted this dino up this morning. nothing about USBs, but I didn't look for them specifically. shall I do so now?

Yep, see whats there. Is the usb port on the PC an add in card or is it 'on' the motherboard?
