Republican Irey might run against Murtha
Friday, February 24, 2006
By James O'Toole, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Diana Irey, the Republican Washington County commissioner, is considering a challenge to U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha, D-Johnstown, the veteran congressman whose critique of the Iraq war has attracted national attention in recent months.
John Brabender, her media strategist, said that while Mrs. Irey had not made a final decision on the race, she is circulating nominating petitions and is "very serious'' about the prospect of ousting the longest-serving member of the state's congressional delegation.
Mrs. Irey, the only woman elected as commissioner in Washington County, referred questions about the race to Mr. Brabender.
Mr. Murtha, who has cultivated a reputation as a champion of the military during more than three decades in Congress, stoked the debate on the war with his call last year for a withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
Mr. Murtha has traditionally enjoyed support across party lines in past elections, but Mr. Brabender contended that his anti-war statement had changed that.
"Obviously, he has angered some people in his district,'' Mr. Brabender said.
Cindy Abram, Mr. Murtha's press secretary, said it would be premature to comment...

The challenge of defeating the longtime incumbent would be compounded by the fact that he is one of the biggest fund-raisers in the House, having collected more than $1.6 million in 2005.
"Mr. Murtha's having a ton of money and where it came from will be part of the campaign,'' Mr. Brabender predicted.

Well, shut my mouth, and sweet potato pie, y'all.
I'd say Run. She can count on support from far and wide around the U.S. and from members of the Military after the emanations from gasbag Murtha. Since she doesn't have a "name" I don't know how supportive the Repub party would be but maybe she can get support from Swannie!
Bush also got 49% in his district. Defintely potential here.
Soo, Diana has a bra bender? What's a bra bender? (:^*)
I think she does have local name recognition. As I recall, she was first elected county commissioner in the mid-1990's...it was an upset...Washington County was majority Democrat back then (it probably still is) but for that term the county commission was 2-1 R. It must be 2-1 D again.
She's beautiful. She will be popular here. To heck with issues.
Gore won Washington County by 9% in 2000 and Ho Chi Kerry won it by about 500 votes. It's swing heavily to the Republicans.
She has a picture:
She can have my support.
I was born and raised in the Old Dominion, and still get down there when I can.
No, she can't.
Murtha's district is home to my parent brigade here in Iraq. National Guard, mostly labor union, all Democrat. They back Murtha to the hilt. Most troops I've spoken to all use the words "Repuglicans" and "hangings" in the same sentence.
I don't even bother talking to many troops here anymore. They are beyond redemption.
Several thousand, and that's just the one's here.
They might be screwballs, but they can't all be registered to vote in the 12th Congressional District.
I took the time to read that entire other thread. It's certainly exciting to be in on the groundbreaking of a campaign.
But I'll bet my body armor Murtha will coast.
