Republicans unite behind governor, but not his policies He gets a standing ovation.

California Republicans leave their state convention today united in their support of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger but divided over his agenda.

GOP delegates gathered in San Jose gave Schwarzenegger a standing ovation when he spoke to them Friday night as he declared that "the Republican Party is my home.''

McClintock did his part Saturday to fire up the base, delivering a rousing pro-Schwarzenegger speech clearly aimed at wavering party loyalists.

"The differences between us as Republicans are nothing compared to the differences between us and the Democrats,'' he said during a speech that was interrupted by applause more than two dozen times. "As Ronald Reagan said, someone who agrees with you 80 percent of the time is an 80 percent friend, not a 20 percent enemy.''

Arnold needs all the Republican votes, AND some independent and Dem votes, to get reelected, because only 34% of the voters are registered Republicans in CA.

People can't ignore the demographics.

CALIFORNIA VOTER AND PARTY PROFILES

http://www.ppic.org/content/pubs/JTF_VoterProfilesJTF.pdf

"The Democratic Party currently has an advantage of 1.4 million voters over the Republican Party (7.1 million to 5.7 million) or 9 percentage points (43% to 34%), according to the Secretary of State.

Among those most likely to vote in this year’s elections, Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 7-point margin (44% to 37%), while 15 percent of likely voters are registered as independents.

... the fact that independents are more likely to lean toward Democrats than Republicans (42% to 28%) tends to work to the disadvantage of the GOP in statewide elections."

Ya get your McCain pom poms yet?

You'd think that the CAGOP would give up conjoling conservatives to support a liberal after the hammering their liberal took last November in spite of their best efforts on this forum.

You'd think.

As long as we can promote political idiocy, the Dem's have nothing to lose and will maintain their advantage....

Arnold can get the votes from Republicans and conservatives, if he starts acting like one. The ball is in his court. Insulting Republicans and conservatives, asking them to support policies that they fundamentally oppose in principle, is not going to help the Party--it will tear it apart. Arnold is the one who has strayed almost entirely from the Republican platform and the platform upon which he was elected. Perhaps you need to whisper in the bosses ear.
But the governor's spending plan is a large part of the intra-party squabble. Fiscal conservatives are alarmed at such high levels of borrowing, particularly from a governor who has spent the last two years advocating cutting up the state's credit cards. Legislative Republicans have introduced counterproposals in Sacramento that advocate paying for construction without borrowing, which prompted Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, to note that Republican lawmakers and the governor "were about $68 billion apart.''
You will note that there is much support for conservatives, and much lesser support for those promoting the leftist agenda like Maldonado and his minimum wage hike.
McClintock received a much more enthusiastic welcome than Schwarzenegger.

McClintock's reception stood in contrast to Maldonado, the Republican from the Central Coast who is running for state controller. That contrast reflected the party tumult here. Maldonado is carrying Schwarzenegger's bill to raise the minimum wage by $1 during the next 18 months, and he can talk passionately about the idea, noting that his parents were low-wage, migrant farmworkers. But the senator was briefly besieged Friday by Republican protesters opposing the idea, and overnight, someone placed stickers reading "Dis-able Abel" over many of his posters.

Hope you folks read the whole article.

The talking point is all that mattered to the CAGOP.

Yesterday, the CAGOP forced Senator McClintock to introduce, and thus imply his authorship, their chief talking point for the next few weeks or possibly the whole campaign cycle.

If you think Schwarzenegger is objectionable, compare him to the Democrat candidates. Ask yourself, when facing this onerous choice; Which rotten alternative will you be better able to tolerate?.

"Arnold can get the votes from Republicans and conservatives, if he starts acting like one."

He did, when he pushed for the special election and put the conservative proposition on the ballot and campaigned for them, putting his entire political capital on the line and the fine so-called conservatives deserted him and stayed home and even voted AGAINST them. I am sure you'll remember, you were one of those who voted AGAINST them, voting WITH the Democrats, to help defeat them.

The more I look at that "campaign", the more of a sham it becomes. It looks like one of Arnold's scripts on the great stage of Sacramento. He turned the whole election into a Prop 75 battle. Do you win by alienating the entire voter population? He insulted nurses, firefighters, and every other public union employee. Did he really want to win? I doubt it. There was nothing conservative about this campaign and he torpedoed anything conservative in the process.

The talking point is all that mattered to the CAGOP.

It's all that ever does. Never look at the record or one can see nothing but liberal moves. More borrowing, more spending, gun control, pro-homosexual legislation, environmental wackoism, leftist judges, leftist appointees, all promoted and within the control of this Governor. What a disgrace.

First the talking point:

Arnold needs all the Republican votes, AND some independent and Dem votes, to get reelected, because only 34% of the voters are registered Republicans in CA.

Next the big lie:

He did, when he pushed for the special election and put the conservative proposition on the ballot and campaigned for them, putting his entire political capital on the line and the fine so-called conservatives deserted him and stayed home and even voted AGAINST them

Next will be an attempt at suppression.

DL tried that stunt on another CAGOP thread this morning and scared the big tenters off.

Rino's who govern like Rino's shouldn't run to us. This is a taste of what McCain will give us if he gets into power. He'll make W look like Jesse Helms.

You are right but Democrats don't vote in as high a percentage as Republicans. Republicans vote at about 5% higher rates. The Independents will always make the difference in California. The problem with the Republicans is that they are a bunch of Rich, Spoiled, Arrogant, Jerks who treat most people like dirt.

I had this experience as a volunteer. Wonder why they can't win.
