I remember when he and Abbott dissolved their relationship and was shocked at his death
The "Who's on first" routine is a classic and no one did it like them. Many years ago I bought a VHS tape of one of their movies. To this day that tape that is still in it's orginal box and wrapper........it is "Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstien".
I wasn't planning on playing it anytime soon, but after reading this I will pay tribute to Lou and play the tape next weekend, for the very first time. I sure hope my old VCR works, I haven't used it in years.
There was a lot of comedians of that era that were terrific. I think the thing that separates them from later comedians are the years that most of them put in on the radio. On radio, the timing was everything. Also, I think the later comedians rely too much on blatant off color and filthy language. The only ones then that did were on the bar and road house circuit and they were few.
I remember but a lot of those were when I got older and didn't have the time to watch. Some were still going when our kids were small. It was nice to let the kids watch TV and not have to worry about the content and screen everything before they watched it. Entertainment has sure changed, and IMO not for the better.
thanks for the link
THAT was great! Thanks for posting this. I grew up watching Abbott and Costello movies on TV. This story is jam packed with bio stuff I never knew. I am now going to email the author to congratulate him on a terrific story.
Regards,
LH
Those guys were great! Thanks for the post, it was great fun! :D
Which part of Missouri?
Too bad that today's "comics" feel that in order to be funny, they have to be crass, vulgar, and completely obscene. I recently saw a broadway show called "Goodnight Gracie" about the life of George Burns and Gracie Allen. Listening to this actor say some of the old lines and watch some of the old clips.....I was dying laughing, wife actually tried to stuff a napkin in my mouth to keep it down.
Funniest part was a clip of Burns and Allen where she is hiding under a bed with a book. George asks her why she was under the bed. She said "You told me read Dr. Jekyll and Hyde (hide)." Thought I was going to pass out from laughing.
That is a fantastic way to celebrate. Kind of like opening a bottle of fine, aged wine for a special occasion.
I wish you well in your watching a true classic.
Today's 'comics' depend on escalating the shock element for laughs, but the laugh is on them, for few people are shocked anymore w/their f-words....just bored and/or disgusted.
Many, many thanks for the link; I and my husband appreciate it. :-)
ABBOTT & COSTELLO-WHO'S ON FIRST?
the complete script and the boys themselves on Real Audio!
Al Franken should be jailed for falsely advertising himself as a comedian. The people who buy his books and/or pay to listen to him should be fined for encouraging this UN-funny adolescent.
Franken has been washed up as a comedian for years, and he was never particularly funny to begin with. Comedians who aren't very funny are called "satirists". That's what Franken is called these days. A "satirist".
Have you read "Do As I Say, Not As I Do"? The chapter on Franken exposes him for the fraud that he is.
it was a small town somewhere around Springfield if i remember right. he didn't talk about it a lot. he left home at 13 and became a Montana cowboy. then he married my grandma. i had Lou Costello and Church Lady for grandparents. LOL
