A Baltimore County school board committee has made recommendations about religious holidays for the school system's calendar, and a leader of the Muslim community said he is disappointed that it didn't suggest closing for two Islamic holy days.

. . . Bash Pharoan, president of the Baltimore County Muslim Council, has been lobbying to close schools on two Islamic holy days since 2004 because the system closes for the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.
"The main issue is that the ad hoc committee failed again to recognize that the issue is about equality," he said. "We want equal treatment."

The committee's other recommendations include:
- Noting the Muslim holidays Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha on the calendar block of the days they are observed.
- Having the school system refrain from scheduling exams on the two Muslim holidays.
- Having the superintendent "make an effort to educate the county's students on the significance of these holidays during the week preceding these holidays, or at an appropriate time during the school year."
- Having the superintendent monitor attendance at schools in areas where Muslims live.

Jewish kids in my school didn't attend on Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur, but they never whined that it should be an offical schooll holiday.

If every religious holiday of every religion were honored by closing schools, there wouldn’t be many school days.
Maybe they will be disturbed to the point that they leave. And don't return.

I confess that this question is what led me to post the article in the first place. They want equal treatment as stated in the article, but apparently only "over here", and equal treatment is a one way street (us for them, not the other way around).
OK, one is September 11th. What's the other one?
More than just the nose of the camel has entered the tent, and we are oblivious. If they don't like the way we run our schools, they can go back to whatever hell hole they came from. I would say this is a pretty good place to draw the line in the sand, but I have my doubts Baltimore has the moral courage to do it.
