WASHINGTON (AP) -- Republican governors are openly worrying that the Bush administration's latest stumbles -- from the natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina to those of its own making on prescription drugs and ports security -- are taking an election-year toll on the party back home.
The GOP governors reluctantly acknowledge that the series of gaffes threatens to undermine public confidence in President Bush's ability to provide security, which has long been his greatest strength among voters.
"You've got solid conservatives coming up speaking like they haven't before, it's likely that something's going on at the grass roots," said Republican Mark Sanford of South Carolina. "Whether it's temporary or not remains to be seen."

If I didn't know better, I would swear it's an election year and we have a lame-duck president.
I bet these governors had more good to say about the president's leadership in the WOT and in helping to produce a boom town economy than they did about Bush "missteps," but the "Nothing but negative when it comes to Bush" coverage of the MSM had to pick out the few bits of carping made while ignoring what I'm sure was generous praise of the president and his policies.
Title should be "RINO governors echo MSM demagoguery about Bush"
Not buying it CNN. Sorry. The story has all the earmarks of the MSM: Katrina, Ports, Katrina, Medicare, Ports, Katrina, Iraq, repeat same. The bottom line, CNN, is that you and the rest of the MSM have staked everything on getting Bush. It failed in 2004, so you figure the way to go is the backdoor. Namely, re re re re re re re re re re re re re re re recycling old news and crafting lovely new propaganda pieces aimed at getting a dem congress elected. Then, you can push for Bush to be impeached. I mean, what justification do you really need to do that, Bush is a Republican afterall and that, right there, makes him illegal.
But honestly CNN, do you really expect me to believe that you can criticize Bush for being too aggressive on National Security (so called "Domestic Spying") while on the other hand being weak on National Security (the "Ports")? Psssst, CNN, missed that story you had on losing control over the Panama Canal. I can expect that anyday, right? Who manages our ports is of concern to me, but honestly, as time goes on it is striking me more and more as nothing more than a vehicle by which the MSM can paint Bush as weak on National Security.
Nope CNN, sorry, not buying it, not one bit.
Good for you! No one can buy it.
Classic Demo Underground "talking points".
The Govs should be seriously concerned about the "unmade bed of Immigration" and the empty field of successor candidates for Bush in '08.
