Distributed computing cracks Enigma code

The M4 Project began in early January, as an attempt to break three original Enigma messages that were intercepted in 1942 and are thought never to have been broken by the Allied forces.

These messages were encrypted using a four-rotor Enigma. That version was considered by Germany to be completely unbreakable, as it could be set up in any one of a vast number of ways (2 times 10 to the 145th power), each of which would encrypt a plain text message differently.

For the full story on Enigma read Stevenson's, "The Man Called Intrepid". Lots of info on Camp X as well as American and Brit wartime intelligence and the French resistence.

There is a bonus story about the Kelso raid on Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen.

If Bush had tried to wiretap the Japanese the Democrats would have wanted his head. It was ok for Roosevelt though . He was a Democrat.

Had the US been cursed with our present federal judicary back in 1944, we would have had to reveal to the Germans that we had captured the enigma and were reading their communications.

You'll recall that upon the capture of the U-505, we represented that the boat had been scuttled and the crew lost. Even though it was probably required by the Geneva Convention, revealing the names of the German sailors held prisoner would have tipped-off their command that we had captured the boat with the enigma intact.

It consumes whatever portion of free resources you instruct it to consume. I left my at 100%. But the process priority is very low, so that it always yields to whatever other process wants the cycles. You won't notice it.

There is a systray icon, and by right-clicking, you can pause the processing or exit the program.

I cannot imagine how it would interfere with corporate VPN. It uses the internet once to get the work assignment...processes it...and then uses it again to send the work product back.

Be sure if your computer is corporate-owned that you have permission of the proper corporate authority.

Well, now that the Enigma code has succumbed to the power of distributed computing, join your fellow Freepers in folding proteins for science--curing Alzheimer's is much more interesting than cracking an obsolete code! ;-) Go here for more info: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1586297/posts

It's my box and my ISP so no liberal pencil neck geek is gonna tell me what I can process or not process. besides they're to cheap to expend the cost of the access and hardware.
