I did a search a bit back about relations between Dubai and Israel (didn't have time to be even remotely thorough), and the impression I got is that Dubai is on pretty good terms with Israel but doesn't want it to be public. Seeing that UAE is almost as small as Israel in comparison with the rest of the Arab world, I'm not inclined to blame them. Reminded me a bit of the fine line Musharraf has to tread.
The small matter regarding Israel will be taken care of with some small print and nothing will change at all. It is of paramount importance to the USA to not be seen as going back on its word. Arabs still put much import on a mans word. Bush has given his word as it were. Finally, in this world, Jews and Arabs simply will not get along, ports, boycotts or no ports and boycotts.

The whole idea of Foreign management of our ports is insane, I don't care who the Foreigners are. One of the charms of globalization, I guess.

UAE condemns Israel's violations of human rights
Well well well. Very interesting.
LOL!!! insane isnt it...
See if I have this right: We must allow Arabs who discriminate and boycott Israel to do business on our ports because otherwise be would be bigots?
Would DP World be subject to American laws if they are doing business in the US?
American law forbids companies to comply with the Arab boycott.
I wonder how "Israel's Best Friend Ever" will resolve this dilemma?
It's the side of people who've retained some shred of integrity, and are cognizant of the fact that outsourcing our homeland security to a nation whose citizens were responsible for the 9/11 massacres is a profoundly dangerous-not to mention, incredibly idiotic-idea.
Just what would all these people say had this deal happened a month or two after 9/11?????????????
There the problem: Israel.
They don't bleed enough, I mean they don't give the President any slack for his grand plan of two sides living side by side in peace.
Ever hear of Hamas?
Political nightmare this is...now if a future UAE port in the US goes kaboom...this admin is toast...AQ is probably planning already. This would look very, very bad.
70-80% of the public do not support this UAE deal, call them idiots, ignorant, uninformed cool-aid drinkers but I don't see this number dropping no matter what new info comes out. These people are voters, and in general, the public does NOT want a foreign company, specifically from an Arab state having ANYTHING to do with one of our Ports. It is that simple.
Between you and me, I think they would be singing the same tune.
I've got another question. Would the President have supported this the day before election day 2004?
By the way, this administration is already toast, and with some justification, considering its most recent misguided actions, of which this disastrous port deal is merely the capstone.
What truly concerns me is the prospect that I-along with the 8 million or so other people that live in this city-could possibly be "toast" once DP World expands its burgeoning shipping empire to encompass the east coast of the United States.
The antiboycott provisions of the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) apply to all "U.S. persons," defined to include individuals and companies located in the United States and their foreign affiliates. These persons are subject to the law when their activities relate to the sale, purchase, or transfer of goods or services (including information) within the United States or between the U.S. and a foreign country. This covers U.S. exports and imports, financing, forwarding and shipping, and certain other transactions that may take place wholly offshore.
Generally, the TRA applies to all U.S. taxpayers (and their related companies). The TRA's reporting requirements apply to taxpayers' "operations" in, with, or related to boycotting countries or their nationals. Its penalties apply to those taxpayers with foreign tax credit, foreign subsidiary deferral, FSC (Foreign Sales Corporation), and IC-DISC (Interest Charge-Domestic International Sales Corporation) benefits.
This wll be an interestigng development!
Globalism is Babelism..
