Issues involving illegal immigration and border enforcement will be in front of Congress and President Bush this week.
Over the weekend, governors from across the United States began their push for the federal government to address illegal immigration. Republicans and Democracts asked for action, ranging from better technology on the border to a guest worker program.
This comes before the Senate begins consideration of several immigration proposals, the latest coming from Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa. Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever is scheduled to testify before the Senate on border issues.
The governors’ plea shows that this is a national issue that is gaining attention farther from the border.
“The notion of being opposed to it, but turning a blind eye to it, doesn’t make sense,” said Democrat Phil Bredesen of Tennessee.
That’s what many people believe the federal leadership has done for too long. They’ve talked about the issue but haven’t determined a solution or direction.
In December, the House of Representatives passed a proposal that takes aim at border security, which, among other things, would build a border wall in hopes of making it tougher for people to get into the United States. The Senate now faces debate and pressures on the many border proposals before it.
President Bush also will have to face governors in one-on-one meetings this week and explain why he hasn’t been working more forcefully to solve the nation’s border issues.
This will be an important week for discussion, but we don’t expect more than talk this week.
Unfortunately, solutions from the lawmakers and the president still appear to be too far off from happening.
GWB likes cheap labor; that's why his alternative to doing nothing is the guest worker program. That doesn't bother me -- cheap labor isn't all bad -- but the fact that it seems to be more important to him than border security does.

That cheap labor is the most expensive labor imaginable.
When you add up all the infrastructure costs -- schools, hospitals, road wear and conjestion, etc. illegals COST more than they SAVE.
The difference is that the invisible cost is picked up by you and me.
That is not counting the cost of having a permanenet underclass, of depressed wages, of teens not being able to get jobs (they are the ones who used to work these jobs), imported criminals, etc. etc. etc.
I wonder which guest worker program these governers prefer?
If they are clean other than breaking our immigration laws, then they can get a green card in 10 years when they are released, AND go back to their home country and apply legally. If not, they are shipped back to where ever they came from and if they show up again they get life in prison. We can set up tent cities to house them
This is the only way I will support a guest worker program, after they have served a prison sentance for breaking our immigration laws.
We have the means, we have the money BUT we need the will to lock these criminals up. It is simple to solve this problem, our government only needs to take the steps, which they seem unwilling to do!
That cheap labor is an illusion and you are buying, literally.
The illegals here take two dollars out of our country for every dollar they contribute.
And you get to pay those two dollars.
