His goal in life? Run the White House. Andrew Davis' goal for the week? Raise money for the newspaper he edits. "I just did a large expose on parking services." It's a conservative paper on Clemson's campus, pages known as delicious, conservative brain-food. "We make no qualms about being very biased of the right wing," he says. To help pay for printing costs, 20-year-old Andrew organized a raffle for a rifle: an AK-47. "We're hoping with this event to show people the AK-47 is no more dangerous than a knife or a car," he says.

Stashed in the basement of Clemson's library among thousands of books, on page 138 is Andrew's motivation. "The Second Amendment is one of our least appreciated that we have and probably the one that is most attacked. We hope this event will raise awareness for the Second Amendment," says Andrew. Not everyone on campus is pleased with the paper's idea. Andrew says he's heard from a faculty member and a student who plan to protest.

But he has found support from campus leaders. "The reaction from the administration has not been one to shut these people down but to let students exercise these rights," says Andrew. And that's a lesson this student hopes to take all the way to the White House. Raffle tickets go on sale February 27th through March 2nd. Organizers plan to offer them on campus near the main library from 9am until 3pm for a $5 donation. For more information you can e-mail Andrew at observr@clemson.edu

Getting back to topic, this is what a WASR-10 looks like:

It is not full-auto nor is the gun being auctioned since full auto "machine guns" have been tightly regulated since the mid 1930's. The WASR-10 is a inexpensive ($275 to $425 range) Romainian variant of the AK style rifle designed back in 1946-1947. Judging by the price paid by Andrew Davis, they are probably "raffling" off one of these.
This was posted earlier on FreeRepublic Rifle raffle triggers ruckus at Clemson so i would suggest checking that thread as well for info on the "raffle".
As for college campuses, you will all be hard pressed to find one that allows student (or anyone) to open carry on campus. It is a liability issue, not a civil rights issue. Most colleges and universities dont want to be held responsible for the shooting death of a student so they enact these blanket laws that cover all firearms (in most cases a "firearm" is "anything that propells a projectile by means of expanding gas" which covers pellet, paintball and BB guns) to reduce their liability in a law suit.
Why "raffle" off a gun and not books? Because it is a conservative paper and he "hopes this event will raise awareness for the Second Amendment". What better way to grab everyone's attention than "raffling" one of the most recognizable rifles of all time?

and has better ballistics than the M16

Has roughly similar ballistics as a .30-30 actually. Not stellar. Not as good as anything in .308 Winchester/7.62 Nato, certainly.

"Just what does being Canadian explain to you?"

You wouldn't understand. You have to be a citizen not a subject.

Call me a prig but I don't think guns have any place on a University campus in the world unless you are an Olypic duathalon contender with the UN. Last time I heard they don't use AK's in duathalon guns in the Canadian Army.

Good morning.
"OK I'm going to say it.

The pro gun crowd have gone over the top on this one. There is no place on a U campus for weapons automatic or otherwise."

Why?

Why are you going to say it and why is there no place on a university campus for weapons like these?

Correct me if I'm wrong but no-one is diverting education resources from text books to firearms auctions are they? Is the university themselves sponsoring this event instead of a class in avionic engineering or something?

"This is the AK-47 assault rifle, the preferred weapon of your enemy. It makes a distinctive sound when fired at you. So remember it."

Good morning.

Would it get me banned to call you an elitist snob?

If so, I won't do it.

He is anti-gun. Of course there is a place for guns on campus as there is anywhere else. For both self defense and when people have time to shoot them.

When I was at Clemson, the place for guns was in every room in the enormous (and infamous)Johnstone dormitories. Every closet had a built-in rifle rack left over from the days when Clemson was a quasi-military college.

I used mine for beer funnel storage. 8^)

Only among the faculty and some liberal northeasterners who make their way down. If you take a walk around campus, it would not be unusual to see half the student body in camo, lol.

This is true. It's also the reason why we get so much guff from the more, ahem, "sophisticated" universities. I take it as a badge of honor these days.

I *was* one of those west coast lefties when I came to Clemson in 1986. Four years and exposure to genuine political diversity cured me of that.

Yes, I feel that the "Redneck Ivy League" title is actually a compliment to the school.

I hope he doesn't mind me posting this response to my query about buying a few tickets from him.

Sir, unfortunately we've had to shut down ticket sales because of student and faculty abuse of the SC law that says we can't limit the number of tickets sold, nor deny persons tickets without payment. We're seeking out any avenue to prevent further abuse, especially in future events, but for right now we've had to cease ticket sales to prevent further abuse. I apologize on behalf of the students and faculty here at Clemson who have ruined this event for everyone else. But we are are still going on with handing out literature about the second amendment, and going ahead with the drawing with what we have now. Thanks again for your interest.

ya think there's maybe a reason why there's a lot of AKs floating around

Yep , it's because the absolutely unconscionable profligate
former Soviet arms purveyors sought to flood every area they thought they could profit by destabilizing . The 'elements' using them have less than zero concern for ballistics , when in a pinch pangas will do for them nicely. You see less M-16's because on the other hand the US maintains fairly tight controls on who becomes the end users of our hardware . The exception in that case is the Palestinians who somehow get them out of the Israeli supply chain . That should be a treasonable offense punishable by hanging.
Anyway, you could not pay me to own one of those damn things ,just on principle.

"Come on, I got two warnings from Jim Rob and he got two honest apologies back. And where did you get the idea that I am pissing on the US Constitution. I have more respect for it than most Americans. As far as I know JR and I are on good terms and I have one pleasant and courteous email for our beloved leader that confirms my opinion. So go ahead make my day."

Ok........I will. I was under the impression that anti-gun liberals weren't welcome here. Perhaps I was wrong?

Narcing me out to Jim Rob? Man class is not your middle name.

Were a member of the Apple Polishing Snitch Club in highschool? I think you were probably the club president.

Nice try.

I you actually read my replies you would have seen that I am not anti gun. I've handled gun. I've in fact handled sub machine guns. I've just never had the opportunity to actually shoot one. I grew up in the army. Guns have their place I just don't think they have a place on a University campus.

Your opinion doesn't interest me.

If Jim has a problem with me I'll deal with that but you are not going to push me off this site so get a new hobby.
