His goal in life? Run the White House. Andrew Davis' goal for the week? Raise money for the newspaper he edits. "I just did a large expose on parking services." It's a conservative paper on Clemson's campus, pages known as delicious, conservative brain-food. "We make no qualms about being very biased of the right wing," he says. To help pay for printing costs, 20-year-old Andrew organized a raffle for a rifle: an AK-47. "We're hoping with this event to show people the AK-47 is no more dangerous than a knife or a car," he says.

Stashed in the basement of Clemson's library among thousands of books, on page 138 is Andrew's motivation. "The Second Amendment is one of our least appreciated that we have and probably the one that is most attacked. We hope this event will raise awareness for the Second Amendment," says Andrew. Not everyone on campus is pleased with the paper's idea. Andrew says he's heard from a faculty member and a student who plan to protest.

But he has found support from campus leaders. "The reaction from the administration has not been one to shut these people down but to let students exercise these rights," says Andrew. And that's a lesson this student hopes to take all the way to the White House. Raffle tickets go on sale February 27th through March 2nd. Organizers plan to offer them on campus near the main library from 9am until 3pm for a $5 donation. For more information you can e-mail Andrew at observr@clemson.edu

This guy and his paper need support. Everyone could use another gun. Let's see if FR can't buy more tickets than the students.

"This sort of agit prop nonsense is going is turning American Universities into under performing second rate political mosh pits."

Too late. They are well past that.
I have to say it is a clever way to get some publicity.

So you don't like Bertrand Russell?

Have you read anything by Bertrand Russell?

Why not raffle a case of Wild Turkey on Campus?

How about a $1000 gift certificat to Victoria Secret.

That should raise academic standards.

Ah. Enlightenment is beyond comprehension. We must actually raise standards to achieve our goals.

So you actually mean something by this comment?

If you do please fill me in. I'm on the edge of my chair in rapt anticipation.

Really? Then by all means pull down and read "Theory of Wing Sections", ISBN: 0486605868 by I. H. Abbott.

I'm sure that for you it's more interesting than actually learning something about the Bill of Rights.

The Bill of Rights takes a week to discuss and debate in high school. In university you might spend one semester on the topic in a History class.

US Universities are falling producing students with advanced science, engineering and mathematical skills at the post graduate level. Winning a raffle for an AK 47 will not get you into graduate school. Your target scores at the local gun club are not going to help you either.

I mentioned the Theory of Wing Sections", ISBN: 0486605868 by I. H. Abbott rhetorically.

I could have mentioned 100 examples of reference books that are more useful to a college student than and AK47 copy.

Assualt rifles aren't dangerous because they can't be concealed. Most gun crimes are from handguns because everyones going to see the guy with the assualt rifle coming.

Oh and when a commie revolution starts its going to start on a campus with rich white kids wearing 200 dollar pants made by poor chinese children. Might as well have the gun near the battle.

I guess that is why (as an undergrad) I cut amethyst inlays for the Security chief's S&W --in the '70's. Universities used to have shooting teams, as did high schools.

Heck, I like semi-auto, I like large magazines, and I like a firearm with more authority than a .22.

I had a couple of professors who were making flintlocks using no power tools, cutting their own screws, etc. The rifles were things of beauty. From that I gained an interest in metalwork, machining, and an enhanced interest in firearms.

If just one student decides to become an engineer over the appreciation of the simple beauty of a reliable rifle, even one of theirs, it is educational.

Some folks seem to think that mere posession of such an arm makes one into some sort of homicidal maniac. Hoplophobia is alive and well.
