I like listening to AirHeads America. It's like listening to an intellectual train wreck. The Dubai Ports World story was classic. One host said it was the worst thing in the world and promoted terrorism, and Bush should be impeached for it. In the next show, it was a Karl Rove plot to help Republicans take control of the Universe and DPW wasn't any threat.

Most of AirHeads America's revenues come from public service announcements and I don't even know if they get paid for them or just some kind of tax credit. Also, in my market, aside from Zin, the Rad Dyke Plumber (hey, I can't make this up), they really don't get much advertising. I suspect a bunch of the music they play during breaks is covering gaps the shows have allotted for ads that aren't filled.

Keep burning the money guys, there is a limit to political contributions, and AirHeads America is burning it at a great rate.

I just noticed something that isn't in this article. A definite declaration that they are going to find a new home on another station in that area.

The last articles I read about four different AA stations across the nation ( I told you these reports are rare ) going under made that exact boast. AA went off the air here ( Charleston, SC ) in September. Not a peep yet on their "new home", nor do I think there will ever be one.

Yuppers to yunz both but radio today...sadly for years...has been about demographics more than the number of listeners. Advertising in general and radio especially has fragmented.

It's easy to understand from a buyers POV. If you're selling hunting gear you aren't going to get as much dollar return on oprah as you would on a show with a predominantly male, hunting oriented audience.

I can't say for certain but I would guess that AA and left wing oriented programming draws a lower income demo. I doubt Cadillac or Mercedes is gonna buy ads there. Same for any upscale item or service.

Generally all that kind of programming ends up with is clients with limited ad dollars or endless PSA's paid for by an organization or government.

That's the sort of thing that played a part in killing off the Easy Listening format. Lots of EL stations had huge 12+ and Time Spent Listening numbers but advertisers figured the audience was so broad their dollars were scattered and better invested in targeted marketing.

Personally I think an EL type format with a broad audience could work. I'd program a wider range of music, add personality, news and local content. The problem is it would be expensive to operate, and the big challange is you have to find advertising that works across that audience.

I don't see it happening anytime soon, and I wouldn't expect to get rich with that format.

I think you make some good points. I've never been to Missoula but the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundations headquarters is there and I was active in it. Knew some members from there and it is quite a sportsman's area. Don't know the population but it can't be too big.

The problem with EL formats is that nobody listens. Oh, the station may be on your radio, but it`s back round noise. When yo are buying radio time, and it ain`t cheap, you want the listeners listening. Talk radio does that and that`s why Rush is on so many stations.

"Sheesh...Advertisers go where the listeners are."

Specifically, the spending listeners with disposal income, not aging hippies still on the dole, living in a flat overrun with mangey cats.

It is interesting that so many of the Lefties on the radion are comedians by trade. I guess it helps to have a sense of humor to present that material . Then again lefty humor tends to the sneering boy-is-he-a-stupid-piece-of-scheiss-I-bet-he-wets-his-pants variety with the lowest level satire imaginable.

Throwing down the gauntlet? More like dropping a lacy little glove and hoping some big, strong man would pick it up.

My liberal friend was excited that Dead-Air America was picked up by a 50,000 watt station in Buffalo?!

Shouldn't there have been some sort of government bail-out offered up? Where's the love...

"Why go to Air America when CNN is more readily available in most areas?"

It would be more appropriate to say "NPR"
National PUBIC Radio

"( Charleston, SC )"

The South Carolina coast is one of my favorite areas.
If I ever return to the US, I hope it will be there.

Kudos for you for linking that. Now THAT is how you do a rant--lots of anger but also specific solutions.
