Students Walk Out Over Teacher's Suspension for Anti-Bush Comments - on Leave After Criticizing Bush

March 2, 2006 — A Colorado school is in upheaval following the suspension of a teacher who was recorded comparing President Bush's rhetoric to that of Adolf Hitler.

More than 100 students at Overland High School in Aurora, Colo., walked out of class this morning to protest the decision to put geography teacher Jay Bennish on administrative leave.

The school administration made the move after a student went public with a 20-minute recording of Bennish's comments to his class.

In the tape, the teacher is heard saying there were similarities between remarks Bush made in his State of the Union address and "things that Adolf Hitler used to say."

Superintendent Monte Moses told ABC News affiliate KMGH-TV that policy calls for both sides of an issue to be presented to students. He said Bennish's presentation appeared unbalanced.

Sophomore Takes Recording to Radio Station

The recording was made by 16-year-old sophomore Sean Allen the day after the president's speech. Allen said he had been disturbed by "political rants" he heard in Bennish's class.

"So these kids are going to have notes on why George Bush is related to Hitler and why the state of Israel was founded on violence and terrorism," Allen told KHOW Radio Wednesday when he went public with his tape.

"These kids are going to have notes on this and accept that as fact."

On the tape, Bennish, who has taught in the Colorado district for five years, is heard quoting part of the State of the Union address: "It is our duty as Americans to use the military to go out in the world and make the world like us." Bennish continues: "Sounds a lot like what Adolph Hilter used to say."

"We do want teachers to express their opinions, but to put that in context and to provide opposing points of view," Moses said. "All discussion must be fair and balanced."

"[The suspension] is not a disciplinary action. It is to give us enough time to sit down and gather all the facts," said Moses.

Tustin Amole, a Cherry Creek School District spokeswoman, told KMGH that an investigation of the incident would take about a week.

Some of them were protesting. Apparently, they were protesting both ways though. ABC won't acknowledge that, though.

I just saw this story on the TV news. One student taped the teacher's comments. Many other students are defending the teacher's actions.

Defend the indefensable is the lib's way.

Let's see. They are walking out in support because this teacher was pushing his political views on his students. They would probably also walk out in protest if he was pushing his religious views on students.

I suppose it's completely out of the question to ask the "teacher" to teach the subject of geography and ask the students to attend school.

No matter what excuse they give, the vast majority of kids really walk out in protest of the overall lack of beer in high school.

Ten minutes into our protest, we were in Shop Rite Liquors down the street addressing our principle grievance.

After watching the video on FNC it was obvious that this "walkout" was orchestrated by at least two female "teachers." It appears that the "teachers" called a fire drill at the "school" and then were out there making sure that their braindead, young skulls full of mush were facing the cameras. Pretty sick but you know the Commies at ABC loved it.

Thank God for tape recorders or no one would know the truth about this.

Thanks for the link. Good job.

How about we suspend the kids too. If they don't return after suspension, withhold their transcripts or fail them in the course for their permanent record.

And you're always be able to get one hundred kids to cut classes if you give them a "cause".

"it's your job as a teacher to present two points of view and let students exercise their critical thinking skills"

One professor (basically a glorified debate class) I had that stands out in my mind had the most amazing ability to completely detach from the argument. One day he would be arguing as an apologist for Lenin and the next sounded like a Cato Institute spokesperson.

To this day I have no idea what the man actually believed.

On the tape, Bennish ... is heard quoting part of the State of the Union address: "It is our duty as Americans to use the military to go out in the world and make the world like us." Bennish continues: "Sounds a lot like what Adolph Hilter used to say."

This "quote" from the State of the Union address does not appear in the transcript of the State of the Union address, which is widely available on the Internet. But this is what we have come to expect from the left, lies to prop up their delusional ravings. If Mr. Bennish actually said that the statement "It is our duty as Americans to use the military to go out in the world and make the world like us," he should be fired for either (a) gross incompetence in not having the most basic work ethic and/or skills to get his facts straight, and/or (b) a reckless disregard for the truth that should not be accepted in the classroom, and/or (c) being a brazen liar who is using his tax-funded position to advocate his own political positions.

Tustin Amole, a Cherry Creek School District spokeswoman, told KMGH that an investigation of the incident would take about a week.

No, no, no Tustin. First thing you do is form a "Blue Ribbon Panel" to look into the incident. Take your time--three months should be adequate.

Next, the panel announces its intentions to begin an investigation. All inquiries as to how long the investigation will take, what they've found so far, etc., should be deflected with a comment like, "I'm not at liberty to discuss the investigation while it's on-going", or "Revealing evidence would compromise the integrity of the investigation".

Now that the work is done, sit back and relax. "But what about the investigation" you ask? "What investigation?", I say. Sure, politicians and citizens will rail, letters will be written to the editor, but that will die off soon enough as the public forgets about the whole incident. In about nine months, release a report (internally, of course) not only absolving Mr. Bennish but promoting him to an administrative position.

If you have any questions, just ask for guidance from your neighbors at CU that are "investigating" Ward Churchill.
