Students Walk Out Over Teacher's Suspension for Anti-Bush Comments - on Leave After Criticizing Bush

March 2, 2006 — A Colorado school is in upheaval following the suspension of a teacher who was recorded comparing President Bush's rhetoric to that of Adolf Hitler.

More than 100 students at Overland High School in Aurora, Colo., walked out of class this morning to protest the decision to put geography teacher Jay Bennish on administrative leave.

The school administration made the move after a student went public with a 20-minute recording of Bennish's comments to his class.

In the tape, the teacher is heard saying there were similarities between remarks Bush made in his State of the Union address and "things that Adolf Hitler used to say."

Superintendent Monte Moses told ABC News affiliate KMGH-TV that policy calls for both sides of an issue to be presented to students. He said Bennish's presentation appeared unbalanced.

Sophomore Takes Recording to Radio Station

The recording was made by 16-year-old sophomore Sean Allen the day after the president's speech. Allen said he had been disturbed by "political rants" he heard in Bennish's class.

"So these kids are going to have notes on why George Bush is related to Hitler and why the state of Israel was founded on violence and terrorism," Allen told KHOW Radio Wednesday when he went public with his tape.

"These kids are going to have notes on this and accept that as fact."

On the tape, Bennish, who has taught in the Colorado district for five years, is heard quoting part of the State of the Union address: "It is our duty as Americans to use the military to go out in the world and make the world like us." Bennish continues: "Sounds a lot like what Adolph Hilter used to say."

"We do want teachers to express their opinions, but to put that in context and to provide opposing points of view," Moses said. "All discussion must be fair and balanced."

"[The suspension] is not a disciplinary action. It is to give us enough time to sit down and gather all the facts," said Moses.

Tustin Amole, a Cherry Creek School District spokeswoman, told KMGH that an investigation of the incident would take about a week.

I'm wondering what any of this has to do with geography.

Cuz geography is about the earth, and Bush is gonna blow it up!

;-)

I am all for free speech, BUT teaching a HS class is not a platform for airing your political beliefs. This guy should be fired, there is not place in our schools for teachers ranting about the pres being hitler or socialist etc. Teach the subject and talk politics after school.

>>Just a reason to get out of class, we did the same thing over a Principal being transferred, sure he was a great guy, but we got the afternoon off......<<

Had we walked out of a class when I was in high school, our ol' vice-principal Doc Curry would have suspended each and every one of us, but not the type of suspension you may think. Things change I suppose.

Just like the MSM to make this all about Bush.

I heard a lot more of what the guy said. It's far more than Bushbashing. There's a lot about evil America being the most violent nation on earth, etc.

He's a real America hater, and was subjecting the kids to his hatred. But the MSM focuses on Bush.

"No matter what excuse they give, the vast majority of kids really walk out in protest of the overall lack of beer in high school. Ten minutes into our protest, we were in Shop Rite Liquors down the street addressing our principle grievance.

LOL!

We had a race riot at my old high school. I didn't leave- I went upstairs to take pictures with my 35mm camera. A bus had rocks thrown at it. Then I left to take pictures outside. Somewhere up the street a joint got smoked by a few of us. Then we went to a guy's house where nobody was home and emptied a bottle of wine. In this shape we walked back and inside the school to develop my two rolls of film. I had one great riot shot worth printing and made 6 prints!

For some reason, the Irvington Herald (NJ) didn't print this pic:)

>>>This "quote" from the State of the Union address does not appear in the transcript of the State of the Union address, which is widely available on the Internet. But this is what we have come to expect from the left, lies to prop up their delusional ravings.<<<

Pathological liars all. What other party would nominate two consecutive pathological liars as their presidential candidates except for a party of pathological liars?

Hmmmm.

Has anyone ascertained if this is a "quote?"

From the article:

"In the tape, the teacher is heard saying there were similarities between remarks Bush made in his State of the Union address and "things that Adolf Hitler used to say."

You said:

FoxNews reported, though, that the students were split. About half were protesting that he was put on leave, and half were protesting that he made the comments.

Is it not amazing that one half of the students there are patriots to freedom?

Just to emphasize how far out the suspended teacher really is, compare these two pieces of text:

1) Adolf Hitler, Mein Kamph , Chapter 3:

Image hosting by Photobucket

[http://www.magister.msk.ru/library/politica/hitla002.htm} Those five hundred deputies who have been elected by the people come from various dissimilar callings in life and show very varying degrees of political capacity, with the result that the whole combination is disjointed and sometimes presents quite a sorry picture. Surely nobody believes that these chosen representatives of the nation are the choice spirits or first-class intellects. Nobody, I hope, is foolish enough to pretend that hundreds of statesmen can emerge from papers placed in the ballot box by electors who are anything else but averagely intelligent. The absurd notion that men of genius are born out of universal suffrage cannot be too strongly repudiated. In the first place, those times may be really called blessed when one genuine statesman makes his appearance among a people. Such statesmen do not appear all at once in hundreds or more. Secondly, among the broad masses there is instinctively a definite antipathy towards every outstanding genius. There is a better chance of seeing a camel pass through the eye of a needle than of seeing a really great man 'discovered' through an election.

2) President George W. Bush, State of the Union Address, 2006:

Image hosting by Photobucket

[http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/01/20060131-10.html] "Abroad, our nation is committed to an historic, long-term goal -- we seek the end of tyranny in our world. Some dismiss that goal as misguided idealism. In reality, the future security of America depends on it. On September the 11th, 2001, we found that problems originating in a failed and oppressive state 7,000 miles away could bring murder and destruction to our country. Dictatorships shelter terrorists, and feed resentment and radicalism, and seek weapons of mass destruction. Democracies replace resentment with hope, respect the rights of their citizens and their neighbors, and join the fight against terror. Every step toward freedom in the world makes our country safer -- so we will act boldly in freedom's cause. (Applause.)

Far from being a hopeless dream, the advance of freedom is the great story of our time. In 1945, there were about two dozen lonely democracies in the world. Today, there are 122. And we're writing a new chapter in the story of self-government -- with women lining up to vote in Afghanistan, and millions of Iraqis marking their liberty with purple ink, and men and women from Lebanon to Egypt debating the rights of individuals and the necessity of freedom. At the start of 2006, more than half the people of our world live in democratic nations. And we do not forget the other half -- in places like Syria and Burma, Zimbabwe, North Korea, and Iran -- because the demands of justice, and the peace of this world, require their freedom, as well. (Applause.) "

I'd say the teacher is a scion of Adolf Hitler. He has about as much chance of job retention as a snowball in Hades.

At least one half of the students sided against the teacher.

That's simply glorious!!!!!

Somehow it just doesn't seem right that teachers here can get away with teaching their students the same hate filled tripe about America that Islamists in madrasahs teach their students.

Our seventh grader was listening to the recording of this nutso teacher, and she said, "Sounds just like . . . and . . . . They say stuff every day like that." Hubby says it is illegal for students in our school system to record teachers without permission of the school. I'm not sure though.

I believe that you need the permission of the teacher...intellectual property, I think.

I don't understand why "conservatives" go on believing that public education can somehow be pulled back from the brink.
"Public education" is failed, failed 30 years ago, and must end now.
Why, oh why do "conservatives" keep bringing up vouchers as the solution? What purpose does it serve to have the gubmint take your money and give some of it back to you (maybe) to spend on schooling?
Even if I homeschool my own child my money is being used to destroy others, and I seem powerless to prevent it.
My house doubled in value. Then the assessor tells me my valuation has doubled. My property taxes will double next year.( I dont live in Kalifornia)
The teachers are slobbering with lust at the windfall they expect to get from the runup in values here.
This is a solidly "republican" district, but it doesnt matter because the County collects property taxes.

this class is about "human geography" and therefore includes such topics as the problems that people in Iraq face.

I wonder if it also includes the problems that people in Darfur face. Somehow, I doubt it.

You are completely correct. When an instructor basically uses the classroom to 'preach' their own point of view, the students are smart enough to know they need to parrot those views if they want to get a good grade.
If a student disagrees openly with that instructor they risk destroying their grade point average. This affects their college eligibility. Is it any wonder that our colleges and universities are filled with left wing nutcases? If they grade their little minions with the 4.0 and those who disagree with 2.0, a conservative thinker is at a disadvantage. Conservative students have to go along to get ahead. They have to hide their opinions. This instructor should look in the mirror if he wants to see who is like Hitler.

On Fox News this morning, teachers around the State are feeling betrayed by this student taping his teachers. I guess they're worried about being held accountable for what they do in their jobs?
