In the aftermath of the public revelation of the presidential "teleconference" and mounting criticism of the performance of Michael Chertoff, Administration sources told HUMAN EVENTS today that the secretary of Homeland Security has "only a few days left" in the Bush Cabinet. As one source acquainted with the former federal prosecutor and U.S. Appellate Judge said under promise of anonymity, "They will give [Chertoff] a little time so it won't hurt his reputation too much, but he's probably got only a few days left."
For weeks, Chertoff has been under fire from Capitol Hill and in the media for his performance during the disaster last year. In addition, more criticism has been fuelded by his clash with former FEMA Director Michael Brown in the so-called post-Katrina "blame game." Last month, however, when I asked White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan if the President had confidence in the embattled Chertoff, he replied without hesitation "Absolutely." Even Sen. Hillary Clinton (D.-N.Y.), a very public critic of the Administration's handling of Katrina, stopped short of calling on Chertoff to leave.
But with the release of the teleconference two days ago and resultant media discussion of the Presidents apparent silence as Brown informs him of pending disaster ("Is Brown Owed An Apology?" was the theme of a debate on Fox News last night), criticism of Chertoff and calls for his resignation have been enhanced. Now, at least one source close to him says the end of his tenure as the nations second secretary of homeland security is near.
So I guess Chert takes it on the chin for the port bungling huh?
Why not throw Andy Card under the bus. He's the most deverving.
I won't miss him but hate to see the democrats get credit if he leaves.
What !!??!!
No Santa Claus?
CHERTOFF SHAVE

I hope the President does not believe that this is going to provide "closure."
I hope if this is true that former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating will replace Chertoff. Keating was very effective during the OKC bombing. And he's tough on borders. Keating would be the perfect pick. We need someone with executive experience to run DHS, not a judge or some hack.
Excellent news! I never liked Chertoff. I always had a feeling he was working for some other cause...
Michael Brown was just on Hardball and when Matthews played a clip of Cherthoff that contradicted Brown, Brown said he (Chertoff) "was full of it."
I miss Tom Ridge
I loved her on the Rugrats.
Wonder who Mrs. Clinton appoint for her cabinet position??? Would she be able to appoint her husband?
What is Michael Brown the media darling all of a sudden. Because he has cursed the Bush Admin? Typical whores, they will use anyone any chance they get to slam President Bush. Chertoff has not impressed me at all, but he came with such good back ground.
Chertoff is a good soldier. He was majority counsel during the Senate Whitewater hearings. Sat next to Fred Thompson.
Congress created a department without putting the right building blocks into it. The administration and congress is to blame for this as much as Chertoff is.
"If dealing with creatures like this is one of the functions of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, then I'm going home."
I don't think he was bashing Bush during Hardball this evening. In fact he told Matthews he thought W was/is a good Chief Executive.
OK, if they manage to run Chertoff out of there, here is the ideal person to replace him with:
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.
No, I'm not on drugs. Mrs. Bill Clinton would be a perfect selection for oh-so-many reasons, a few listed here:
a.) If she refuses the position, it looks like she isn't as concerned about Homeland Security as she claims to be. "When Pennsylvania's Tom Ridge was asked to be the first secretary for Homeland Security, he answered the call, when America called Hillary Clinton, they only got a busy signal." (heh-heh)
b.) If she accepts the position, her leftist base and the morons from MoveOn.Org go absolutely apeshirt, calling her a turncoat, a "neo-con" (really!), and every other kind of epithet. Even run-of-the-mill liberal Democrats will deplore what will look like shameless opportunism.
c.) If Mrs. Bill Clinton accepts the position, she will of course be confirmed by the Senate, and then Governor George Pataki (assuming he gets well soon!) will be able to appoint a REPUBLICAN replacement for her vacated Senate seat.
d.) Once Secretary of Homeland Security Hillary Rodham-Clinton gets down to the task at hand, she will either offend each and every registered Democrat by doing such a good job that she makes the Bush Administration look good, OR she'll screw up so badly that her prospects for 2008 will be totally down the tubes, and President Bush can point to his appointing her to DHS as the 'last olive branch' extended to the Democrats in an attempt to "save bipartisanship", heh-heh!
And no matter what she does, she will be kept in check by a firm, NON-unionized work force at DHS that owes her NO favors at all.
Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea.
