Massachusetts Bishop Refuses to Present Award to Pro-Abortion Honoree

HOLYOKE, Massachusetts, March 3, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Bishop Timothy A. McDonnell, of Springfield Diocese, has said he will not present an award for distinguished achievement to a recipient who is pro-abortion.  In long-standing tradition, Bishop McDonnell presents an annual award, on behalf of the St. Patrick’s Parade Committee, to honor someone of Irish descent for distinguished achievement.

This year, the John F. Kennedy Award will be presented to a recipient who is pro-abortion, and the Bishop has expressed his objection. Thomas J. Ridge was selected by the Committee to receive the award on the basis of his work as the first chief of homeland security. Mr. Ridge, who served six years as governor of Pennsylvania, became chief of homeland security in 2001, and served as the first secretary of homeland security when it became a Cabinet position in 2003.

Bishop McDonnell learned of Mr. Ridge’s selection for the award after the announcement was made in January, said Mark E. Dupont, spokesman for the Springfield Diocese.  "The bishop is aware he is pro-abortion and he has expressed his thoughts on the matter to the appropriate channels in the parade committee," Dupont said to the Republican.

W brought Tom Ridge in to do an important job in an emergency but I have no stomach for Ridge otherwise. He cut a deal with the PA legislature to give them automatic pay raises when he was governor in the 90's. He also raised gas taxes and fees. He was called a "moderate" as a congressman before that. And he used that phony label "fiscal conservative" (see examples above) to describe himself. Of course he is"pro-choice" and I'm proud of the bishop for standing his ground on the matter.

And lets not forget Ridge's friend who was appointed a federal judge (John Jones) and ruled to censor an idea other than evolution out of the classroom in the Dover case. The Ridge record is not a conservative one by a long shot.

He pulls the strings in GOP politics here now and I think for better or worse he gave us Lynn Swann as a candidate for Governor who I will vote for with plenty of doubts just to throw Ed Rendell out.

Well done Bishop McDonnell! At last, something worthwhile coming out of Massachusetts!

I'm not aware St. Patrick supported killing babies.

This is why we should not mix religion and government. There is just no room for morals and conviction in government.

Now will the bishop also decry Senator Kennedy for his total support for abortion? Or are Massachusetts Democrats exempt from such insults?

Does the Bishop know that J.F.Kennedy was known as quite an Adulterer.
Why would he give out such an award named after such an individual.
What has he said about politicians who support abortions being given Holy Communion?

The new bishops in Massachusetts seem to be faithful and orthodox. But it will be many years before they get the Church in that state straightened out, because they inherited such a total mess.

They need to work with dissident priests and flaming liberals, because that's all they've got, at least until they manage to get the seminaries flushed out and operating again. It's either that or fire half the priests in the state and close half the parishes.

As long as they are "men with chests" (as C.S. Lewis would refer to them), God's house will be put into order in due course. May God bless each and every one of them!

I've been meaning to say that you have an honored name. I have quite a few of the old Sheed & Ward books in my library that I gathered many years ago.

While adultery is a sin, recovery is possible;not so for aborted babies.

The bishop is picking his battles.
