Here are some other examples of Shepard Fairey's work:
I'd think he could find himself on the wrong side of a fatwa for this one:
The movie started out with Cash singing gospel music. He never left those roots.
I agree, Cash's religious redemption was clearly implied in the film...it's interesting, in the deleted scenes on the DVD the religious aspect was taken a step further and he and June were shown inside the church service they attend after he goes through withdrawal. The preacher is preaching about Cain and Abel (which is rather fitting given the guilt he had struggled with over his brother's death), and he and June sing a hymn together. I haven't listened to the commentary for the deleted scenes yet so I don't know what the thinking was in deleting it (there are 9 other deleted scenes...they may have felt it was a running length issue).
See post 21 for a marxist connection to Walk The Line.
But was "conversion" a compenent in Johnny Cash's life? Did he have doubt or did he just engage in sin even though he still believed in God?
It sounds like some are attempting to portray Johnny as someone who came to believe in God later. I make the case it was always a part of his life. How you CHOOSE to live your life is apart from your faith (belief in God).
He started out with a sticker campaign of "Andre The Giant Has A Posse" stickers posted up around SF and other cities.
Then he shifted that to Obey Giant with communist stars.
As his work has progressed, he has adopted more communist propaganda iconography and more socialist political hero worship and conservative bashing works.
I agree in some ways...but addiction to something more powerful than human choice requires faith.
For some people of faith, the most wonderful thing is the day they were rescued.
I am one of those. Many years ago I hit bottom and was rescued. Many years ago, but just as real today.
Why he might have started out recontextualizing propaganda iconography, he ended up nothing more than a propagandist. And for evil empires, no less.
Thanks for the post.
I watched the movie tonight, and not the Oscars ... a fine movie ... Phoenix is great as the Man in Black ... Witherspoon is wonderful as June Carter.
Johnny's journey through life was a hero's journey.
Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. Could not have said it better myself. People on FR just like to bash movies period. That is the only area I tend to disagree with my fellow FREEPERS. You can't make them happy. Between bashing this film which was excellent and bashing End of the Spear, it is a wonder that hollywood makes any family films.
However, Cash's son said he wanted to emphasize his mother and father's relationship in the film, so the "God" angle is not emphasized as much as Cash's autobiography emphasizes it.
I also thought the movie was excellent.
I differ from some posters here in that I thought it was quite clear about his conversion. I didn't need to see him praying...his witness to me was the change in his life.
I thought that part of the film in which he hit bottom and June told him it was time to make a new beginning (implying strongly a new beginning in the Lord) was the most poignant moment in the movie.
Vy powerful to me (having been through such an experience personally).
I want the article that says that. Before you make that criticism and upset all these freepers on here and ban Reece movie, we want proof.
(IMHO,) a person's choices are a type of work. Faith without works is dead (separation of a living spirit from the soul or thinking processes).
How a person chooses to live their life manifests their faith and choosing wrongly manifests a lack of faith. When we are tested, as part of the advance in spiritual maturity, our faith increases via the Holy Spirit, while we remain in fellowship with Him. Those proper choices only occur when we choose while remaining in faith with Him.
Choosing independently of faith will either result in a moral degeneracy (such as legalism or asceticism) or immoral degeneracy (such as lasciviousness or a frantic search for happiness). In either case, whenever choosing is separated or discerned from faith, it fails to remain in faith with Him.
Perhaps Johnny's autobiography and music are a more enduring tribute to Christ and Johnny, while the movie reflects more the lack of faith of Johnny's son. I suspect more of Johnny's music might endure a purifying fire while the film might get burnt up or discarded as dross.

Wow. You are upset about this movie. I didn't really get to emotionally involved in the movie when I watched it. I thought it was a good movie and that was about it. Sorry you did not like the movie so much. Hope another movie will be better for you. Don't give up a good movie is on the way from Hollywood...LOL.
DARN!!!! I was so hoping that you were respectfully WRONG. This is truly disappointing. I am sorry you found this...LOL.
Sorry to have been the bearer of bad news....if it's any consolation, she only gave $1,000.00, and considering now she gets $29 million per movie...she gave less than peanuts. Maybe deep down she's a good conservative, but ponied up some money to stay in Hollywierds good graces...just a theory. LOL.
Yes she may have done it to stay in good graces, BUT she also could have made a statement like Patricia Heaton who says basically to liberals - Go to He!!. I appreciate her for that and she is a millionaire as well. Reece has stated before "well how much more money do I need" to a question on why she does not do more movies. Well she does have too much money than she needs and is now giving it to Hillary. I wonder if she was not legally bound to only give 1,000 dollars she would have given more. I can only imagine that Reece gave because Hillary is a women and wanted to give to the girl power. I would hope that this is the reason and not because she agrees with her politics. Dang, I am not coming on FREEPERS anymore because I find out such terrible news. LOL. Actually, I think Reece is a beautiful women and now she is tarnished forever!!!!
