Coroner: Lack of Oxygen, Not Peanut Butter, Killed Girl

MONTREAL — A lack of oxygen to the brain likely played a role in the death of a teenager once thought to have died of a peanut allergy after kissing her boyfriend who had just eaten peanut butter, a Quebec coroner said Monday.

Coroner Michel Miron told The Associated Press that it appeared that Christina Desforges, 15, had suffered from "cerebral anoxia," or a lack of oxygen to the brain, which caused serious damage.

He provided no further details — other than to say that no foul play was suspected in Desforges' death — because he has yet to submit a final report to the provincial coroner's office.

"The Canadian Association of Food Allergies intended to use the Desforges case to launch an education campaign," he said. "I had to tell them the cause of death was different than first believed."

Miron also said the teen didn't receive a shot of adrenalin immediately after being kissed. It was reported the shot hadn't penetrated her skin.

He said scientific journals had contacted him questioning the use of adrenalin and how it's injected.

But he said the teen didn't use her syringe to give herself a shot of adrenalin because she didn't have any allergic reaction to peanut butter.
A reporter for Le Quotidien “But no one at the scientific level was able to succeed quickly at confirming the cause (of her death),” said Louis Tremblay.

“The proof has now shown that’s not what happened,” he added.

One media report at the time also said that, along with being allergic to peanut butter, Desforges was also asthmatic.

A friend, who was with Desforges when she became ill, told a Radio-Canada reporter last November that the young girl told him she thought her asthma was acting up.

Can't wait to see what snopes.com does with this new urban legend.

But, I'm afraid the peanut-butter theory is now too ingrained into the public mind to ever suffer the truth.

Ummm, not to be too much of a literalist, but isn't ALL death (other than being blown to bits maybe) caused by "oxygen deprivation to the brain"?

I certainly don't mean to make light of this tragedy, but the title of this thread amused me to no end.

Dollars to donuts that it was sexually related...either choking herself to get high or both doing it to eachother and she went down for the count.

you can't really help it since the coroner doens't really say what killed her. not peanut butter. that narrows it down i guess...

"lol you know, i thought that too. no breathing and then the heart stops. gee."

Or, the heart stops, and then no blood goes to the brain.
Or the pancreas stops working, causing organs to break down, which causes the heart to stop, so no blood goes to the brain.
Or you're cut and the blood goes out on the street and not into your brain.
Or...
Seems like no matter how you dice and slice it, the leading and only cause of death (other than being blown to bits) is oxygen deprivation to the brain.

lack of oxygen to the brain

That's what kills most people. But what caused the lack of oxygen to the brain? Cerebral anoxia is caused by something else. It sounds like the doctors are spinning the story for the families. You just don't get cerebral anoxia out of the blue. She may very well have died from a peanut allergy. But there has to be some underlying condition to cause lack of oxygen to the brain.

That is what happens to people that are allergic to peanuts. When thy contact the aroma of peanuts, they can't breathe.

the first article i read about this was just the coroner saying that it wasn't peanut allergy that killed her, he wanted that to be known as soon as possible because it was about to be written up in a medical journal. i hope there will be a follow up on this some time soon.
