What’s behind Bush's bad poll numbers? (Presidency is beginning to resemble Carter's, Nixon's)
The Washington Post ^ | March 7, 2006 | Alan Abramowitz

Posted on 03/08/2006 8:30:19 AM PST by presidio9

Judging by the numbers, last week wasn’t a good week for George Bush. Of course, news that the administration had approved a deal to turn over the operation of six U.S. ports to a company owned by the United Arab Emirates did nothing to buoy his sagging approval ratings.

But the truly damaging revelation, from a public relations perspective, was the admission by White House press secretary Scott McClellan that the president didn’t even know about the deal until after it had appeared on the front pages of newspapers around the country. That shocked even many Republican loyalists.

The problem for President Bush is a growing perception that he simply isn’t competent. That’s the story behind the polling numbers that have declined — bad week by bad week — since February 2005 when the president’s approval rating stood at a respectable 52 percent.

The predecessor whom Bush has begun to resemble isn’t, as many liberal Democrats seem to believe, Richard Nixon. It’s Jimmy Carter.

Carter’s political demise began when the American people, including many Democrats, started to perceive him as in over his head in the Oval Office. That’s what may be happening now to Bush.

Competence is not a partisan issue. Last week’s polls found that somewhere between 34 percent and 40 percent of Americans approved of Bush’s job performance.

Wish, wish, wish away...

Couldn't be the oversampling of a particular political persuasion...

Wish, wish, wish away...

Surprised the Post admitted Americans think Jimmah is a nut.

Being compared to Jimmy Carter is a political kiss of death. That's part of Bush's problem... he's caught in Second Termitis with no idea of what to do in his last three years in office given that his Social Security initiative is all but dead. If there's a White House agenda, its nowhere in sight.

Three things point to his lower poll numbers: Iraq, Iraq and Iraq.

Simple as that.

The MSM needs to have the public believe that Bush is unpopular prior to the mid-term elections so his coatails won't be a factor and the D's win one or both Houses. The MSM is desperate to cover the impeachment of Bush.

Boy, is that a rhetorical question from the Post, or what?

What is 5+ years of heavily-biased negative reporting, Alex?

In which the WaPost has played a major part.

Its just the DBM ( Drive By Media) trying to make news out of nothing. They fired vollies of bullets into the Cheney shooting and Port security but the 'victims' of those shootings quickly regained their composure. Now they are trying to see if they can get anything out of the latest polls.

Its also concerns over spending, taxes and regulations. Where's the Administration on these Republican signature issues? They've fumbled the ball on them. It ought to be a piece of cake.

Never in a million years could this Presidency, when taking the facts in to account, resemble Carter's failures.

Jeeeeezzzz...who cares about polling, the implied equivocation is sheer silliness.

I don't think the author gets it right about competency -- certainly not comparing him to Jimmah Carter. God forbid. But IMHO, the reason Bush's numbers are falling is because the real Bush really came out of the closet in his second term. And actions count far more than any words or promises.

The facts, verified by actions, that he is not a conservative, that he most certainly is a globalist with a 'one-world' agenda, again confirmed by actions (and non-action as in the case of our borders and support for illegals), which is being conducted at the terrible expense to our country and our real citizens, is what is pulling him down.

You can only hide reality for so long. It is out in the open. And the numbers are responding. My opinion says alot of those downside numbers are from staunch conservatives, like myself...

Of course, the Piss never considers that the all out 24/7 barrage of LIES from the Treason Media might have something to do with poll results.

By the time one lie is countered a dozen others are floated.

Iraq will be W's salvation when the WMD's are unveiled. Katrina hurt him when he failed to defend the terriffic efforts of FEMA, the Coast Guard, etc in launching the largest, fastest rescue effort in history.

Quite right, GSGOP! Spending like a drunken sailor to attract indies and dems - many of whom wouldn't have voted for him anyway.

The liberal MSM run negative story after negative story about Bush, often distorting what really happened. Then run a poll that basically reflects the effect of that negative reporting.

It's a self-fullfilling prophesy.
