Baby boomers or bums?
CNN ^ | March 9th, 2006

Posted on 03/09/2006 9:23:36 AM PST by laney

In the 1960s and '70s they burned their bras and draft cards, marched on Washington, founded Earth Day and vowed never to trust anyone over the age of 30.

Today, the baby boomers are doing the limbo, dancing wildly and waving their arms in the air to the unintelligible lyrics of "Louie, Louie."

At least that's what they're doing in Portland, Oregon, at the Baby Boomers' Social Club Friday night dance at the Red Lion Hotel.

"We have a live band once a month, and we do all sorts of different dance styles," says Melanie Pedersen, co-founder with Julie Dahlman of the Baby Boomers' Social Club.

"Julie does a wall sweep," Pederson says. "She says, 'come on gals ... go get the guys that are holding up the walls.'"

"You know, we're in our 50s now, so it's okay to ask the guys to dance," Dahlman adds with a laugh.

Indeed, this mammoth generation -- at once lauded for its commitment to social change and derided for its perceived self-indulgence -- has grown up and is now going gray.

So, how did the "Me" generation do for itself? Have the boomers prospered as much as they could have, or did they miss key opportunities to better their nation and their lives?

It depends on whom you ask.

Some experts say the boomers did not plan well for their future, especially their financial futures, relying instead on the whimsy of a historically rosy economic era to carry them along.

They were doing the same thing the 90% today are doing as laws about smoking keep getting passed. Nothing, living their lives and earning a living.

I'm a boomer...and was to some extent, a product of the 70's, a decade that if haedn't happened, I would probably have been a millionaire by now.

But I never burned a bra, marched in a peace protest or denigrated our country. Whatever party animal tendencies I had in the 70's were replaced with a college degree, earned at night, holding a job and paying taxes..and possess a deep love and respect for our country. We baby boomers are also part of Reagan's raiders and I'm very proud of that. That oesn't mean I didn't also enjoy attending the Louie Louie parade in Philly a couple of times (before then Mayor Goode, stopped it) :-)

My mom is 78. My brother, two of my sisters and I paid off her house. We expect nothing at all when she goes. My wife and I had her parents change their wills so that anything earmarked for us goes instead to our grandchildren. We really suck.

Most of our generation was moaning and lamenting to self-agrandizing songs like "Don't Give Me No Hand Me Down World". Remember the evil "The Man", "The Establishment"?

Many got sucked in to feeling sorry for ourselves, and this country is the result of that selfish, fooish attitude.... unfortunately.

Our parents really loved and lived for their kids that's for sure...

That's certainly true of my parents.Sometimes I wonder if the children of the Depression/WWII era were *too* good to their kids....*too* tolerant.....*too* forgiving.

Are you saying YOUR age people are depending on their parents' money, or Boomers are depending on their parents' money?

ROFL, and you criticized my art tastes last week. It's funny to be chastised by a druggie!

Have a nice day.

Great Post...Yes it was the *Party* Generation and most boomers went on the live the values of thier World War 11 Generation parents because as children we did learn conservative values even though many of us went a bit haywire for a few years in a liberal sense... :)

I had no control over the S & L scandal for example and I just saw one of the Keating 5 on Fox this week touting his expertise. What expertise? He is a crook just like the rest--they cover for each other and I don't care how honest the start out--they end up doing what is best for their personal wealth.

John McPain.... just another symptom. That silly man just may be the next president. Chrissy (Peace Corps.) Matthews is salivating over the thought.

"We suck."

I am 62 and my husband is 60. I agree with you. Although I will say we got involved for some years trying to stop the socialist/criminal government and politicians, but as Claire Wolfe says, "It's too late to work within the system and too early to shoot the b*&^%*ds."

"You could be correct in citing your 10% figure, but I must point out to you that it's the very *same* 10% that's been in effective control of the democRAT Party, and many other sources of corruption and decay in this country, for the last 20 years."

No. Since 1968......and control was wrested from old Democrats bigtime with the over-publicized antics led by a few scumbags who became and remain well known since then......and the media helped them with saturation coverage

Yes they did, but maybe they unintentionally made it too easy on some of us.

I am saying many *BOOMERS* have parents that were able to obtain a nice nest egg for themselves that they will pass on to thier children...Why wouldn't they?

We were busy trying to make sure we had enough Fritos in the house to get us through the amount of weed we had for the evening.

Why would anyone think I was JOKING?

Because it's a well-known fact that Boomer tokers prefer Twinkies over Fritos by a margin of 5 to 1, that's why.

:^)
